In my opinion (and since it cannot be proven it is only an opinion) fate is nature simply playing out it course. And since we are part of the universe we must also each be part of a grand schema, much like the numbers within a formula.

I think the scientists in the Island, otherwise referred to as “the others,” were in search of understanding this phenomenon. They essentially invoked many disciplines, from mathematics to genetics, to see how the numbers 4,8,15,16,23,42 relate to natural law.

The study, however, seems to have collapsed because of many unexpected elements and variables that they did not account for while designing the project. For one, the numbers might have became an obsession for some of the scientists and might have driven some to madness. This madness may have caused different groups, ultimately leading to many killings, in order to fulfill a prophecy.
