[quote comment="1058"]Here's my theory about the numbers in Lost:

For centuries mathematicians have found that certain numbers, much like codes, are repeated throughout natural law and in essence have defined the physical properties of nature as we know it.

Prime numbers, for example, such as 23, are those that can only be divided by themselves and one. They are the most important objects in mathematics because, as the ancient Greeks discovered, they are the building blocks of all numbers-any of which can be broken down into a product of primes. (For example, 105 = 3 x 5 x 7.) They are the hydrogen and oxygen of the world of mathematics, the atoms of arithmetic. They also represent one of the greatest challenges in mathematics.

There is an important sequence of numbers called "the moments of the Riemann zeta function." Although we know abstractly how to define it, mathematicians have had great difficulty explicitly calculating the numbers in the sequence. We have known since the 1920s that the first two numbers are 1 and 2, but it wasn't until a few years ago that mathematicians conjectured that the third number in the sequence may be 42.

Numerical sequences are also of great importance in natural law, to the extent that they are bricks and mortars of order and balance in the universe.

As to the relationship of these numbers to Lost, the numbers 4,8,15,16,23,42 are seemingly random numbers as part of series to convey the same message: the universality and the interrelationship between natural elements. The participation of each character on the island, while seemingly coincidental, is really part of the grand order of nature, otherwise known as fate.

But what exactly is fate? Fate is the reason that the paths of each of the characters in the series intertwined even before they crashed on the island. In my opinion (and since it cannot be proven it is only an opinion) fate is nature simply playing out it course. If our physical reality is governed by a series of numbers that are repeated in one way or another in many natural laws, then the universe must have a certain order. And since we are part of the universe we must also each be part of a grand schema, much like the numbers within a formula.

I think the scientists in the Island, otherwise referred to as “the others,” were in search of understanding this phenomenon. They essentially invoked many disciplines, from mathematics to genetics, to see how the numbers 4,8,15,16,23,42 relate to natural law.

The study, however, seems to have collapsed because of many unexpected elements and variables that they did not account for while designing the project. For one, the numbers might have became an obsession for some of the scientists and might have driven some to madness. This madness may have caused different groups, ultimately leading to many killings, in order to fulfill a prophecy.
