Is Juliet Penelope Widmore?

Remember the opening scene in the Lost season 3 premiere “A Tale of Two Cities”? A beautiful woman looked at herself in the mirror and many of us instantly said to ourselves “Isn’t that Penelope Widmore, Desmonds girlfriend?”.

A lot of people where confused after the episode. Was Penny an “Other”? Had she been on the island this entire time? How did this connect to the season 2 finale where Penny received a call from two guys who said that they had found the island?

Fear not my friends, because there is a simple answer to these questions – Juliet and Penelope Widmore are not the same person. Hopefully most of you have already discovered this, but just to be clear, a quick comparison might be in order.

Juliet and Penny Widmore

In the left corner, talking to Jack in the Hydra station – Juliet, played by Elizabeth Mitchell.

In the right corner, stunned to find out that the island has been found – Penelope “Penny” Widmore, portrayed by Sonya Walger.

It should now be beyond doubt that Penny and Juliet are not the same person. Hopefully no one will feel confused during tonights Lost episode – “The Glass Ballerina”.

I’ll be honest, I had no idea anyone ever confused the two. They look totally different to me.

  2. Missy says:

Me too. And Penny has a very posh english accent. But that is very kind of you to clear that up for those who might be confused. I personally think that Juliet acts a lot like Libby. The head tilt, the almost condescending tone, and the caring sad eyes. IT could just be a coincidence or the producers trying to replace the likeable characteristics they lost when LIbby was killed. HHHmmmm I can’t help but think that Libby might have been involved with Dharma. Maybe not. I guess we will just have to wait and see.

  3. Andreas says:

I actually thought about adding Libby to the comparison but figured she was too much of a regular character for people to mistake her for someone else.

Personally it didn’t even cross my mind that the two actresses have some similarities, but in the comments after “A Tale of Two Cities” a few people said that they thought Juliet was Penny, so I figured it was best to clear things up.

I totally agree with you that was the first thing i had trouble with, i was sure it was her till i saw where she was

  5. Hugo Reyes says:

I like very much the sensation of baked goods.
And I think Julite is Libby’s sister..maybe…I think

First of all, I never thought Juliet and Penny where the same person so don’t say that I don’t get “what Lost is”.

A number of people confused the two characters with each other during and after last week’s episode. If people are having trouble understanding the show I don’t see any harm in trying to explain things.

This site is not just for hardcore fans who know every single detail about the show so if I happen to publish a post targeted at the less Lost-savvy readers now and then you will just have to live with that.

This has turned into the best Lost blog out there because of these type of topics. This is THE place to go if you need help understanding Lost.

Thank you for the support Hammer =)

  11. seano12770 says:

Who was the woman that gave Desmond the sail boat?

  12. Andreas says:

The woman who gave Desmond the boat was Libby

  13. seano12770 says:

Thats right.Funny that she was killed off so soon.I thought she would have had a bigger role considering she was in the nut house with Hurley.

  14. Andreas says:

Just because a character has died on the island that doesn’t mean we have seen the last of them. Libby’s story will probably be told in the backstory of one of the other characters.

  15. john says:

thanks for clearing it up. there are way too many similar looking blonde women in this show.

  16. Jennifer says:

Who was the blond woman that Jack’s father talked to late at night when he took Ana Lucia with him?

I don’t think anyone knows really. Some have speculated that it could be Claire’s mother.

  18. JHG says:

Was “Tale of Two Cities” the first time we have seen Juliet? If not, when else has she appeared in previous episodes?

Oh, and I must admit I was confused for a couple of seconds and thought Juliet was Penny when the episode began…. just because she was the last person we saw at the end of season 2, and the Juliet was the first person we saw at the beginning of season 3. But I soon realized it was not Penny. :-)

  19. Andreas says:

I’m pretty sure that we saw Juliet for the first time in “A Tale of Two Cities”.

  20. Anne Austen says:

Juliet is an Widmore, for certain. But…
The last scene at 2×24, when the Portuguese guys asked for Ms Widmore, she appears answering the phone, there is the photo that Desmond carries all the time.
And at the scene of 2×23 (25min) when Penelope finds Desmond at the stadium, the actress is different…
    This is strange !
Maybe they are sisters, or simply the production changed the actress…

  21. Andreas says:

Peneolope is actually the same actress in both the photo and in character in episodes 23 and 24. In previous episodes where we only saw Penelope in the photo, she was portrayed by a different actress/model. The photo was later manipulated to replace the original Penelope with Sonya Walger.

  22. Bridge-Man says:

Juliet was listening to a CD with the song “Downtown” on it. Who wrote that song? You might want to read my first-time post under the “Tale of Two Cities” episode archive.
