Mike and Tom are not the same

I thought last week’s post about Juliet and Penelope would be the only post I’d have to write to explain that two characters seen on Lost are not the same, but I was wrong.

A lot of you have started asking about Mike, the fatherly figure who was growing marijuana in Locke’s flashback in the Lost season 3 episode “Further Instructions”. Apparently he looks a bit like Tom, the big guy among The Others also known as Zeke, Beardy and Mr.Friendly.

Once again – they are not the same character.

Tom from The Others and Mike from Locke's weed farm.

To the left, Tom played by M.C. Gainey. To the right, Mike from the flashback in “Further Instructions” played by Chris Mulkey.

Also, thanks to commenter Samsandrasan for trying to clear this up in the comments.

They look and sound somewhat alike, but couldnt or shouldnt be comfused for one another. anyone who has been watching should be able to tell the difference in the two.

Mike looks a bit like Glen Fry,of the “Eagles” fame.Glen Fry also did a few cameos on “Miami Vice” back in the day. Also I rewatched the last episode that caught all the flack on this site (myself included) but on second review it really wasnt that bad an episode, actually it was ok – to modestly good..Lastly I bet yea dollars to donuts that Locke actually shoots the undercover nark in the back while he walks away, thoughts?

There are lots of dumb Lost fans out there, thanks for helping to school them.

I think this is more for fun,
I dont take this to serious, some do, you might end up “Lost” if you are to serious.

fantasy and wild thoughts may lead to the answer.

I’m rarely shocked by stupid questions anymore; for such an intelligent show, there *are* some . . . er, not-so-intelligent . . . fans. I agree with you, poopy, it *looks* like he dropped the gun, but that cut was way too quick for my comfort.

The Glen Fry song “Smuggler’s Blues” was the basis for an episode. Fry himself played a minor character.

His music “You Belong To The City” was also featured in the 2 hour (or was it 2 part?) special episode when they come to NYC. That episode PO’d my neighborhood community board. In that episode Crocket says they are going on a bust in “the Heights” which I was told meant Jackson Heights, a part of northern Queens near LGA airport. I lived there at the time. But the area they filmed it in was Long Island City, a very commercial and industrial part of Queens just over the East River from Manhattan. The community board thought it gave Jackson Heights a bad reputation nationally.

I don’t think this is necessarily dumb fan thing. They do look similar. And it’s not the first time someone from a flashback ends up in present day time on Lost. Maybe the casting person shold cast folks that don’t look like anyone else on the show. Same thing with Juliet and Penny. FOr a while I thought it was Penny. Took some time to realize it wasn’t.

  8. Julie says:

Eh, just chalk it up to another time the writers….casting director made you actually ‘think’ for your entertainment. Look how much buzz its gotten.
I must admit I was fooled for about 3min on the Penny/Juliet thing and about 10min on the Tom/Mike thing. The only reason it took longer with Mike and Tom is that I knew that the flashback was supposed to be ‘awhile’ ago and I was trying to rationalize that maybe it was supposed to be Tom at a younger age.

“Bad things happen to people who hang around with me Charlie” This is said to Charlie by Locke just before entering into the caves/just before they cut to Locks”Flashback” sceen where he raises the rifle on the Nark.I predict in a future episode that they take up where they left of in the flashback with John slightly lowering the rifle and I have a feeling “Mike and “Jan” would know Locke couldnt shoot the Nark and thus followed Locke and the Nark into the forest and “fixed the problem”, a mess of Johns own doing that he couldnt cleen up himself. Also when Hurley tells John that Henry was the “Others” leader, Locke gets this look about him that says;Again,I trusted someone and I get screwed again.I also predict that in a future episode that Locke kills Henry/Ben to “clean up his mess” a mess that he couldnt clean up with the Nark, thoughts?
P.S. After rewatching the last episode I cant belive what a Great actor the guy who plays Locke is.The contrast in the way he played the same character,Flashback Locke and Island “Apocalypse Now” Locke.Great stuff.

I agree that Terry O’Quinn is very cool. hes one that id definatly like to meet and chat with. i also agree that the locke flashback from further instructions will be revisited in a future episode. i think thats where locke gets parilized. i think the dude that was guarding the greenhouse follows them as a back up plan and does away with both of them.

Did anyone else hear Jack’s fathers voice over the intercom echoing something he said earlier in episode one this yearr?

  12. KillerR says:

Yeah, it was Christian’s voice, but Juliet played it off saying that the intercom hadn’t worked for years and Jack was hallucinating.

But, then in the “Every man for himself”, Jack said he heard Sawyer screaming and asked Juliet what was happening to him and she said he was fine and that it wasn’t his blood on her yada, yada, yada. She didn’t even try to say the intercom doesn’t work or anything. Jack will remember that and now we know that Juliet is a liar and that she is trying to play with Jack’s head.

  13. RedneckGirl says:

You got that right she is trying to play with Jack’s head and maybe his heart to. I like Jack,Sawyer,Ben,Tom and Mike.
