Is the Galaga the submarine?

In the episode “The Glass Ballerina”, Colleen is heard saying:

“Danny, wait. They have a boat. Ben wants us to take the Galaga…”

I’ve seen some speculation on the forums that this is a formal name, possibly for a boat, but after last week, it’s starting to sound like a submarine. In “Every Man for Himself”, Ben says to Juliet:

“The sub is back, so come with me now. We have a situation.”

Is this how the Others get between the smaller island and the main island? What are your thoughts on the separation of the Hydra from the rest of the DHARMA activities? Does Ben have more cons in store for Sawyer et al?

seems like the whole thing with the islands is one big con. also the operation where they needed jacks help. come on, that was a test to proof jacks a “good” one.
i think there as to be a more effectiv way to mover between the islands…if there are two islands…

2. violet says:

sorry this is off topic.

cc: my question was, do we know how desmond and penelope met?

(anyone else reading this post can jump in, if they know.)

3. poopypants says:

-The sub answers the question of how the Others boarded the boat without using the beach and without getting wet.
-I’ll give you 100 to 1 the sub aint’
Yellow.
-Charlie makes me puke.
-Kate either has two personalities
or cant act,perhaps the latter.
(Would the writers or the actress kindly remember chicky-poo is a serious badass)
-Thoughts?…

4. VidGamer123 says:

We don’t know how Des met Penny yet.

On topic, though:

lol, Galaga!

“Ben, the Galaga has been compromised!”

“Fine, take the Space Invader then.”

“That hasn’t worked in weeks!”

“Then take the Pac-Man! I don’t care!”

5. poopypants says:

-The Galaga is either the sub,or i herd a rumor that the Others have a Zepplin.
-To bad that lightning bolt didnt zap ole Charlie right in his teeth.Give it up Charlie me boy,Clair dont even like yea, beat it.
-The XRays were a plant to make Jack think its going to be his Idea to operate on whom ever has the condition, when it will be Bens idea all along.
-Anyone seen Berni or Rose,I guess their at the Starbucks on the coast of Island number 3(Sarcasm not a spoiler)

6. Cecilia says:

violet, yeah, what VidGamer said :) We haven’t had any early flashbacks of Desmond courting Penny yet…

LOL on Galaga the video game.

Um… zeppelin on the island? I guess stranger things have been known to happen, but I think that would fall in jump the shark territory for me. :)

7. poopypants says:

Someone posted that we should have another look at the Blast Door Map again. It could be the question mark in the middle is the “Losties” island and are surrounded by smaller islands connected through underground tunnels or caves.Desmond turning the Fail Safe Key could have caused whatever keeps the islands from being seen(electromagnetic field?) to go down.

Been reviewing SE03-E01 Tale of two Cities – after the backward zoom at the beginning of the episode showing where the others camp was it doesn’t seem like the tail of flight 815 crashed on another island (there is a distinctive shoreline on the right hand side of the screen that runs all along).

My guess is that the Hydra Station is indeed located on another island while the main part of the Other’s camp (including those nice little homes) resides on the main Losties Island

9. Lesley says:

Wikipedia defines a submersible as follows:
Submersibles differ from submarines in that submersibles typically have shorter range, and operate underwater almost exclusively, having little function at the surface. Many submersibles operate on a “tether” or “umbilical”, remaining connected to a tender (a submarine, surface vessel or platform). That sounds correct doesn’t it? The platform is at the hydra station. Perhaps what Sayid found was a tether. And should we all really be so surprised there is another island? Foreshadowing told us when we saw the Orientation video the first time! If there is a ferry then there is usually more than one land mass! Everyone on this blog is so smart and it got past all of us for an entire season! I think everyone moved off Dharma island after the incident. The Others burned Kate’s clothes because there is still a nasty virus to worry about… and perhaps the EMF had a hand in growing that virus. Even the smoke monster has a mind of its own now. The children are nowhere to be seen because they are no longer on the Dharma island – - it is not safe for little ones as it would make them sterile. So the Others moved them for their own protection. The real question is why they are currently cherry picking the Losties. I am guessing the surgery and spinal tumor are a red herring. They need Jack, Kate and Sawyer for something bigger then one man’s life. If the Others truly have access to the outside world, the cancer victim could go to a real hospital where the paddles actually work.

10. MasterPo says:

I agree Kate seem very humble and aquiescent. But we have seen her bide her time before. Could also be she’s just overwhelmed but the apparent hopelessness.

I was thinking more about the Others and killing. We *have* seen the Others outright kill people. Ethan and/or another Other hung Charlie by the neck very high in a tree when they took Claire. If Jack hadn’t come when he did Charlie would be dead. And that Other guy hiding with the Tailies killed the Tailie that Anna had thought was an Other and put in the pit. And it is presumed that the Others killed the real Henry.

So they don’t seem to have a problem with killing people. May not be their first choice but they don’t seem squeemish at it.

11. MK says:
They need Jack, Kate and Sawyer for something bigger then one man’s life.
That triggered a memory cell in my brain. Remember in the last episode of S2 when Michael was getting ready to leave with Walt and the boat, Ben said to Beardy that Michael brought them something more than they could have hoped for (refering to Jack, Sawyer, and Kate).

12. MasterPo says:

I’ll go out on a limb and propose this:

What if the Others are really aliens?

Consider this:

Dharma is setup not on Earth. It’s on another plant or planet’s moon or astroid, or, in another universe or dimension. The EMF power is needed to open a portal or doorway or transporter to/from this other location.

The orginal Dharma project was setup and run by Hansorg. But the installation was detected by aggressive aliens. The aliens decided to infiltrate Dharma (since no one knows each other in Dharma who would know a new humanoid wasn’t in fact a human fellow Dharma worker) to learn about humans. Then the aliens ultimately kill the original Dharma researchers (maybe the illness was created by the aliens). Now they are using the island and Dharma equipment to study humanity, test us medically and psycologically, and develop a strategy for attacking and destroying us. Or perhaps enslaving humanity. The Others as aliens are trying to be like humans to better understand us and infiltrate our society.

It’s a long shot I know. But that would explain how some of the Others (like Ethan) have such great strength compared to their physical appearance, why there is such a mix of old and new technology, why they are interested in fertility and human reproduction, why they are interested in ESP and other 6th senses, and would explain the 4 toed statue (maybe it’s part of an alien figure) and the black smoke thing. It could also explain how the beach plane crashed on the island when it took off from Africa and how the Black Rock ship, an apparent 19th century slave ship) is on the island. It would also explain why the Others are just soooooo darn good at deception. As an aggressive conquering alien society that’s what they do all the time!

13. MK says:

Woah dude… If it turns sci-fi, lots of people are going to get royally pi$$ed at the writers.

There are ways to explain everything we have seen. The most effective way so far has been to confuse us with more mysteries :)

14. Bruce says:

I don’t see that at all looking at the Dharma maps.

Why are we all so surprised that there is a second island? I’m sticking to my theory that we’re going to learn about even more islands.. but anyhow.. if you remember correctly when Eko and Locke are watching the video in the Pearl station there is a mention of the ferry taking the dharma people ‘back to the barracks’ or something to that nature.
If everything was on one island what would be the need of a ferry?
If you live in Tampa, FL and want to get to Gainsville, FL your not going to take a boat. So, looks like to me they’ve been hinting at a second island for a while.

16. Bruce says:

again, do the maps we’ve seen hint to other islands?

They don’t need to. The maps show the locations of Darhma stations, it is not a geographical map.

18. MasterPo says:

In one S2 episode, I recall Locke and Ecko find a cliff overlooking a clearing. In the center of the clearing, cut into the grass, was the image of a large “?” question mark. It was that episode they found another hatch, went in, but it looked damaged or destroyed from the inside.

19. MasterPo says:

Also, could “Galaga” be a brand name used to describe a generic item? Like the way many people still call a photocopy a Zerox, or, as Romex is a brand name for building wire but people and contractors use it genericaly to describe any outlet/fixture wire.

20. MrElbert says:

Speaking of second islands, I was just watching “Do No Harm” from season one, and when they are burying Boone, in the back left corner in some shots there is a mountain skyline that appears to be in no way part of the same island. This might have just been an oversight, though.

I agree Julie, I don’t know why we are getting so wrapped up in whether or not there is another island.
Islands don’t usually stand solo but are in chains or groups. Back when we first saw the ferry dock scene, I posted that I thought there was some kind of an offshore station. That could be a ship, a mainland, an island…I don’t know why it’s a surprise or why some people don’t think it’s real.

As far as the submarine vs tunnels. Why not both?
Maybe some of the stations were closed because the bears got into the tunnels. Maybe that’s what tore up the station that Locke found. Pretty obvious the bears munched on a few inhabitants.

22. Julie says:

Just thinking out loud here…
But could it be something that could shed light on how old their equipment is?
Like back in the 80′s anyone that had a (and I think they were) Camero called it Kit like on Nightrider.
So.. maybe this sub or whatever is from around that time and someone said “HEY.. it looks like the battleship on Galaga!”

Kit was a Trans Am…I had one in the eighties but I just called it fast. :)

The writer love to use things that they are fans of…my guess is that the writer who got to name the sub (if it exists) was a fan of Galaga the video game.

24. samsandrasan says:

There is a village in India called Galaga. Not surprising that they would use Indian names or words. This is the Dharma project.

Dharma forms the basis for philosophies, beliefs and practices originating in India. The four main ones are Hinduism (Sanatana Dharma), Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism, all of whom retain the centrality of Dharma in their teachings. In these traditions, beings that live in harmony with Dharma proceed more quickly toward Dharma Yukam, Moksha, Nirvana (personal liberation).

Pala from the ferry dock. The Pala Dynasty was the ruling Dynasty in Bihar and Bengal India, from the 8th to the 12th century. Called the Palas because all their names ended in Pala, “protector”.

Dharmapala , 770-781, made the Palas a dominant power of northern India, installing his own nominee on the once-prestigious throne at Kanauj.

I just put this on another thread…

Was she getting back in the cage because she loves Sawyer or because it was another test to see if he would run?

27. samsandrasan says:

She was ready to escape with Sawyer. It was only when he wouldn’t come with her (couldn’t) that she climbed back into her cage. Her workload has been pretty hard. I think she is mentally and physically exhausted. Zeke didn’t try to hide his being nice to her. I think it’s more of their headgames.

28. MasterPo says:

I doubt she’s an Other. I think they are justy using her to get to Sawyer, maybe Jack. It’s very rare in a show for a female character to get physically abused as much as male characters (so much for equality!). One of those Hollywood rules I think.

29. samsandrasan says:

I think they are using Sawyer to get to Kate. Beating the hell out of him and being nicey nice to her. Messes with your head.

Yeah, just thought it weird that after her breakfast with Ben she wanted no part of rebelling. She didn’t decide to run until Sawyer “got the device”. Then decided to stay when he didn’t want to go with her. Likely just the writers playing on suspision.

31. samsandrasan says:

Seemed like she lost her fight when they tasered Sawyer for her demanding to see Jack. They won’t punish her for rebelling, they’ll beat the hell out of Sawyer for whatever she does.

32. Pam says:

Has anyone eles figured that the polar bears could be what they observed in the cages? If so then the possibility of island 1 being island 2, and island 2 being island 1 could be true, because if the polar bears got out of the cages on island 2 they would have to get in the tunnels or on a sub/ferry, or swim like a mile to get to island 1. And who is weird enough to take polar bears out of their natural habitat and keep them in cages on a tropical island?

33. Bernard says:

When did anyone say the polar bears escaped ? As for why take polar bears out of their natural habits… Hydra seems to be a zoological experimentation DHARAM base (remember the shark in Season 2 Exodus) and Picket did confirm “it took the bear” less time than Sawyer to figure out how to get a fish biscuit

The zeke being nice to her part is what really gets to me. I mean yes, he could just be a sort of dirty old man character and they definitely could be (and probably are) just using her to get to sawyer/jack. BUT nevertheless there is something fishy about the recent change in her character. We’ve seen her go from a guntoting badass willing to kick the crap out of whoever crossed her (or jack/sawyer) to this scared little girl–I don’t know, but maybe we’re getting set up for some more kate flash backs that contain info about her obvious “daddy issues”…

35. samsandrasan says:

Pam-
I think that it’s pretty clear that the polar bears were the bears in the cages. There could be tunnels that they got into but it is true that polar bears can swim for miles. They’ve been known to swim 60 miles in search of food.
One of the projects was reclimatizing, I guess to further the survival of the species.

As far as the four toed statue goes I recommend if you haven’t already checked it out, to read Andrew’s Ultimate theory at 4815162342.com. HE addresses that sucker pretty well.

We know she feels responsible for the death of her love. Threatening Sawyer to keep her in line seems like a logical tactic to use on someone who thinks she is responsible for another’s death.

39. samsandrasan says:

The hidden island has been thrashed out pretty well on the Every Man for Himself post.

40. Martin says:

Some intresting theorys here. But to me the showing of the second Island didnt suprise me. I quite liked how we saw more of Desmonds ESP and now Charlie is picking up on this. Could lead to some funny talks between Charlie and Hurley.

The sub is an excellent way for them to get to the island unoticed from the Hydra and to see to their other projects notably the sharks. But what gets me is the Polar bears. How did they transport them to the main island. This sub must be fairly big to hold one never mind two polar bears. Most subs are small its only in the military you get the large ones and those require masses of man power to operate. So perhaps they have other modes of transport or as said other ways of getting to the island namely tunnels. (I think the latter is least likely though were probably getting carried away.)

I can see Sawyer wanting and already planning his next con. He knows his enemy now and he knows he will have to step up his plans to get one over on them. I think Jack is made to feel he is needed because thats exactly what Jack needs to feel. They have other needs for Jack but we wont see these till late in the season or perhaps next season. I think Kate is doing fine remember she and Sawyer shot at the two others tracking them in season two. She hasnt lost the edge she has. But lets not get carried away, she only did what she did out of love for her mum. She isnt a cold bloody killer.

41. MasterPo says:

It could be the clothes.

Really.

In psycological warfare, it is well established that changing someone’s clothes can change their behaviour. So Kate is a bad ass when she’s dressed more tom-boyish in jeans and sneakers. Put her in a nice dress and ladies shoes and maybe she feels feminine or vulnerable.

42. Catalanfan says:

In the forth episode, the man in prison is called Constanza like George Constanza, the Seinfeld’s best friend, he looks like him, did you realize? I think is a little homage.

43. MasterPo says:

That whole thing was sooooo obviously a con on the guy. Warden and all. Very shallow writing.

I wonder how much Sawyer’s “commission” was?

44. Robert Thomas says:

I want to know what kind of tests they made Walt take after they kidnapped him. I know its been speculated that it had something to do with psychic abilities, but if so what does that have to do with the Others? EW hypothesized that their grand leader is a powerful psychic who “summoned” the plane and its passengers to the island. I think its all bs and that the others are just a bunch of nutjobs left over from Dharma who believe the outside world has gone to $h!t and their afraid of everyone else.

45. Brothaslide says:

I love the show but I hope that we start seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. I’m getting a head ache trying to figure out all the “twists and turns” of the plot and characters. Lost has already “lost” some family members – They aren’t watching the show anymore because it’s too confusing.

Jennifer Garner got her ass kicked quite a few times on Alias.

47. poopypants says:

Im glad were on the “Kate” issue. In season 1 she was one of,if not The best characters on the show. But now, honestly,im really hoping she gets killed off soon.Did you see when they brought the girl Sun shot through the cages area on the stretcher?,and Kate says something to the effect,”Your not happy now are you” or “Your not smiling are you”,sickning!!!.I argee she has some unseen agreement with Ben/Others but I honestly think the writers and/or Evangeline Lilly have messed by not keeping the same character traits that she and the writers had developed in Seasons 1&2.

48. Reeses says:

On the Kate issue:
I think Kate will become a very important person in the next few episodes. I think that the writers may be doing with Kate, what they did with Locke. I’m confident that at some point, the hopeless/helpless Kate will have a “slap in the face” awakening and return to her bad ass self. These characters have been put through the ringer by the others.

As for the sub… didn’t Rousseau say that her team was on a sub??? Could it be that the others took it from them, and of course are able to travel back and forth from island to island?

On Ben’s tumor… maybe the reason he has lived on the island all his life is because of the tumor. If he were to leave the island he would surely die from it. In my opion the island is what is keeping him alive, along with Rose and her Cancer, or Lock not being paralized. Maybe Ben needs Jack so that he can get off the island, or maybe he doens’t care because he likes living there. I have to admit, the fact that the xray was right where Jack could see it was kind of obvious that they wanted him to see it.

sorry to ramble on..

Just posted this under “Every Man..” before I saw this one. Maybe “sub” is a nickname for their transportation system inside the tunnels. Their own form of a subway. Although I prefer the submarine in hopes of finding a 6- or 7-headed monster (hydra) in the ocean.

Interesting ideas guys and gals!

Regarding Kate’s behavior, we have to remember her little chat with Ben in A Tale of Two Cities. He told her that the next weeks would be hell for her. The question is if he meant physically or mentally. I think he offered her some kind of deal which she reluctantly agreed to and that’s why she takes it easy around The Others.

55. KillerR says:

Yes, clothes do have a big effect in a psycological aspect. I heard a thought (podcast) that they dressed Kate in nice clothes so that Sawyer would easily fall in love with Kate, however, i dont know the purpose to why really. Perhaps they want more children on the Island, its a strange and odd thought ;P.

Wikipedia says this about Galaga:
Perhaps the most famous element of Galaga is the ability for the player’s ship to be captured by the enemy. Boss Galagas (the gray enemies at the top of the formation) will occasionally stop mid-dive and attempt to capture the player’s ship with a tractor beam.

Maybe a tractor beam is what kept desmond from finding new zealand like he said he should have after a week of sailing. It also could have caused rousseau’s science team’s ship to crash into the rocks.

I’m pretty sure the clothes has little to do with Sawyer falling in love with her if we can even call it that–I’d say the clothes revealed a little more of what he already wanted to see anyway…I mean seriously, the guy has had the hots for her since they crashed.
