The Secret Sacred Legacy of Lost

1. Black smoke (fire) + White polar bear (ice) + Island (earth) + Ocean (water) = the 4 sacred elements, with representations to the 4 cardinal points (North, South, East, West), each with its own Saint/Representative (Catholicism/Paganism).

2. The Others' Water burial ceremony is because the Smoke monster possesses the dead bodies buried on the island (natives, slaves, shipwreck victims, Dharma initiative, Others - the good guys and the bad bunch), and they are now the judge/spiritual representative of the island.

3. It is one of the sacred sites on Earth. Anomalies on it can affect the Sky.

4. People are drawn to it by fate/coincidence - to judge and be judges, to be found and lost.

5. Couples come together, children are born, children die and couples are torn apart. The entire cycle of life is represented.

6. It is the World represented in a bubble.

7. Body, Spirit and Soul are drawn here, changed here. We are being shown all of this so we too, can change ourselves - for the better, or worse. It is up to you wither or not you will see it as Black or White.

Please don't be hard on Andreas, folks. Please bare in mind that visitorship being what it is at the moment, Lost Blog's rules must be bent in order to be more "elastic" (translation: visitable). At least that's the way I see it. I'm sure when the show is back on, the blog can afford to be strongly stern about no-spoilers because there will be plenty of visitors anyway. :P
I haven't actually read the article for fear of spoilers but what happened to the no spoiler rule?
My philosophy is that if it comes from the main writers (JJ, Damon or Carlton), it's not a spoiler since I don't think they would reveal anything crucial. If you guys don't feel the same I could start writing spoiler tags on quotes from the creators too. Just let me know.

Like you say, I think what Damon meant when he said that Michael and Walt leaving the island was the second most important event, he was referring to them being the first survivors to leave the island.

I have a little idea - what if Penelope and her crew find the island at the end of season 3, but it turns out that she is evil and never really loved Desmond. Then Michael and Walt could come to the rescue at the end of season 4.

I really hope that Penelope really loves Desmond, because their Romeo and Juliet story is great, but you never know.
