Lost's Nikki and Paulo

Many of us were confused when Nikki and Paulo suddenly popped up on the Lost island. Who are they? Where do they come from? Why is Paulo always going to the bathroom?

Tonight’s new Lost episode, “Exposé”, which is centered around the couple, will hopefully show us more about who they are and why ended up on the mysterious island.

The official description of the Lost episode “Exposé” is as follows:

Spoiler Warning

Hurley begins to suspect that Sawyer may be involved in an island mystery surrounding two fellow survivors, and Sun learns the truth about her past kidnapping attempt by “The Others,” on “Lost,” WEDNESDAY, MARCH 28 (10:00-11:00 p.m., ET), on the ABC Television Network.

“…and Sun learns the truth about her past kidnapping attempt by “The Others,””

Friggin’ awesome! Perfect timing…just as Claire was starting to like Charlie again…

2. XtraCripsy says:

Instead of broadcasting this episode, they should just show a video of one of the cast parties. I’d rather watch Josh doing bong hits than Paulikki…

3. Bobbi says:

Show just started, and right away, I’m excited. It gives an answer to the show Locke was watching during last week’s episode. Last week, you could hear the show was something about cobra, and a girl named crystal.

4. Jay says:

I don’t know about you guys, but I am glad Nikki and Paulo were dead…I thought they were pretty awful characters…

5. Jay says:

OK…maybe not DEAD…

6. mikey says:

remember what locke said in the beginning “What gets burried here never stayes burried” or something like that. maybe one of them will somehow get out (hopefully not)

7. Austin says:

ehhh, i dunno. it was exciting. buried alive kinda sucks. it definatly was different that the past episodes and explained a couple of peculiarites (the hatch having no soil ontop) that maybe some of use caught. but definatly not the same caliber as the past shows. was it necessary? well if they come back from the dead yes, or if that radio becomes useful. other than that, paulo and nikki still suck.

8. Mabry says:

So… buried alive?

They’re dead for sure now, right? I don’t see how they could get out of a grave – if she could only open her eyes, the rest of her body was probably not able to move (or else surely she would have!) so I don’t see how they’ll be getting out of that rather unfortunate situation.

I’m 90% sure the entire point of that episode was to plant the walkie talkie in the hands of the survivors.

9. Bobbi says:

i looove what someone said, about Locke saying things don’t stay buried….that is no coincidence

10. Bobbi says:

I have a question, isn’t that the hatch, that when they went down, there was still a cigarette lit?

11. desmondo says:

wtf? was that a joke? seriously. what show was that?

12. Seany says:

I noticed the cigarette as well… I thought that would be explained to us. Maybe they suggest that Paolo was going there to sneak in some smokes even though he said he quit. Also, they didn’t go into Ethan’s apparent interest in Nikki and Paolo either. Were they set up, and did Ben leave the walkie talkie for him to find on purpose(the Others haven’t really slipped up like that much, even just for a convenient plot advancement!)

13. aevkc says:

It wasn’t the best episode I’ve ever seen, I’ll admit that. But I’m guessing it’s a build up to something bigger that will make sense down the line. I don’t think they “jumped the shark” if that’s what they were worried about.

14. mike says:

has anyone seen the old sci fi movie ‘forbidden planet’(1956)? I’ve been thinking it for a long time and now i’m convinced that that the show LOST is *loosely* based on that film.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forbidden_Planet
“Commander Adams and Doc Ostrow go to Morbius’ home to confront him about their latest findings. Ostrow sneaks in to use the Krell educator machine. Before he dies from its effects, he gasps out his revelation: the huge machine was designed to let the Krell materialize anything they wanted at a mere thought. “…But the Krell forgot one thing, John. Monsters! Monsters from the id!” Though the Krell considered themselves civilized, their subconscious minds were unleashed by the almost limitless power of the Machine. The race was wiped out in a single night of frenzied destruction, as the machine acted out their darkest urges.”

15. mr jones says:

first of all, though many of you will probably disagree, this episode was absolutely fantastic! However, the most interesting part for me was when ben and juliet spoke about jack, kate and sawyer. They talked like the entire purpose was simply to get jack. Which somewhat sounds to me that this “list” might not be exactly what we thought it was…thoughts?

…also, nikki and paolo still live!

16. Toeknee says:

I thought it was a pretty fascinating episode. Although I’m not sure why Damon and Carlton, in this week’s podcast, mentioned this being a jump-the-shark episode. Is it because it involved Nikki and Paolo, and they were inserted into scenes from the Pilot? That didn’t bother me. In general, I don’t detest the Nikki/Paolo characters as much as most people, so I was looking forward to this episode to learn more about them. I think a lot of the events shown tonight made their actions from earlier in the season seem more plausible (like Paolo’s visit to the bathroom in the Pearl Station). However, their interactions with Ethan were confusing and a bit misleading – I thought perhaps they were going to either be victims of the Others, or end up working with the Others, but apparently neither were the case.

17. e cave says:

It wasn’t as jaw dropping as last week, but this week’s show tied up some loose ends (and as usual made some more); as for Nicki and Pablo (or whoever they are)-” what goes around comes around.”

18. Seamus says:

I hope she survives; she’s pretty damn hot and I am getting tired of Kate. They should get her out and put Charlie in her place.

19. Seany says:

Nikki definitely is hot, but that keeps with the trend of killing off all the hotties ie. Shannon, Ana Lucia, Libby(sort of) etc. Cindy wasn’t killed but she was captured right away. Claire should definitely watch her back!
BTW, my bet is that Nikki lives… see the episode where in the flashback the the Australian girl rises from the dead. Maybe this will be the tie in to bring back Rose and Bernard(where the hell have they been?)

20. Becky says:

What a great episode! Poetic justice at its best. It had a Poe quality to it…cask of amontillado anyone?

The fact they were buried alive with the diamonds was just brilliant writing. You truly reap what you sow…literally, as they are in the ground!

It was so great to see Boone again! I miss him. I find it very interesting that Paolo and Nikki were the first hatch finders and stupid Nikki was not the least bit interested. She was obsessed with those diamonds!

And Paolo knew about the Others so far in advance and never said a word??? What the heck is that?

Do you think they reshot pilot scenes or did we just never notice Nikki and Paolo before?

I personally think Nikki and Paolo are gone for good. There is no way they could dig their way out of that hole.

Did anyone notice how Ethan said the plane split in two over the jungle? If he were really on the plane, how the heck would he have known that? But Nikki was too busy flirting to figure it out.

I am not sure if Sun will tell anyone about the whole Charlie/Sawyer kidnapping her. So Charlie might be in the clear with Claire.

The fact Juliette said Jack was “cute” to Ben suggests the love connection that is forming between she and Jack.

Also, did Vincent know that Nikki and Paolo were dead and that was why he pulled the blankets off of them?

All in all, great episode!!!

21. DocH says:

The buzz has been that someone will be “outed” ie gay. We saw nic/pao in the airport before the flight. We saw Boon/Shan arguing as they came into food court area. Boone asked Paolo if he could borrow a chair from the table, Paolo said yes. Shannon said in a tizzy, “STOP FLIRTING WITH RANDOM GUYS!”. I think we have it… Boone was outed. (not that there is anything wrong with that, ala Seinfeld).

22. DocH says:

Oh. And the Shan/Boon sideshow was entirely for nostalgic purposes. They added nothing to the episode, except they got a paycheck for their hapless careers since leaving LOST. Shannon screaming idiocies at the beach… wasn’t that her entire contribution to the show – wah-wah-poor-is me!

23. Mel says:

Lando Calrssian!

24. Toeknee says:
first of all, though many of you will probably disagree, this episode was absolutely fantastic! Which list? There’s Jacob’s list that Picket mentioned earlier this season – “Shepherd wasn’t even on Jacob’s list”. We still don’t know who is on that list, what the list is for, who Jacob is, etc.

Or are you talking about the list Ms. Klugh gave to Michael – Hurley, Sawyer, Kate, and Jack. I think this scene btwn Ben & Juliet reinforced what we already knew about the list. They needed Jack to do the surgery. Sawyer and Kate were brought along so they’d have ways to manipulate Jack into doing the surgery. And Hurley was brought along for the reasons Ms. Klugh said – to tell the other Losties never to to to that part of the island.

I do agree that the Ben/Juliet scene was interesting. But I thought Juliet’s lines – “Is that Shepherd? He’s cute” were a bit odd. It seems like with all the info they accumulated on Jack – the file Juliet pulled out earlier this season – there must have been a photo in there. And I would have imagined that Juliet would have seen the file – being that she’s a doctor, Ben probably would have showed her the file to ask her opinion about getting Jack to do the surgery. So it seems like she should have known what he looked like.

Me thinks that it has been verified that Dr. Ethan Rom was never on the plane. We saw him tend Claire at the (medical) Staff Hatch and Directed to go find the Losties by Ben and trying to recruit Juliet in Not in Portland. (but I could be wrong)

26. Toeknee says:
Lando Calrssian!
LOL I was thinking I could go for a Colt 45 right about now.

27. Adam says:

Becky, i was also curious about how they shot those scenes. It amazes me that they knew this story of Paolo/Nikki halfway through season 2 when they placed Paolo in the bathroom.

I’m still curious as to why Libby was in the mental institution. lol, somehow that’s the biggest mystery to me.

28. Lesley says:

That was a very nice twist! I loved it!… and now we know why those two always rubbed us the wrong way. A few answers and of course, we are left guessing whether they will survive the burial. Since Nikki was bitten after Paulo, the effects last 8 hours, and her eyes opened just as the sand went in, I would not be surprised if Paulo waited until Sawyer and Hurley left then dug out. I guess we will see if he was able to manipulate enough space to create an air pocket without being suffocated. Either way it will be good. Speaking of manipulation, does that mean Ben got caught on purpose??? If that is the case, then the Hostiles really do have manipulation down to a science!

29. Adam says:

“Me thinks that it has been verified that Dr. Ethan Rom was never on the plane. We saw him tend Claire at the (medical) Staff Hatch and Directed to go find the Losties by Ben and trying to recruit Juliet in Not in Portland. (but I could be wrong)”

Haha I think she knows that. What she meant was that Nikki should’ve realized that it was a weird thing for Ethan to say

30. FMGreenSteve says:

I enjoyed it.

I especially loved that the writers played right into all the complaints from fans. Sawyer repeatedly asking “Who the heck are Nikki and Paolo?” made me LOL every time he said it.

I don’t think Locke telling Paolo “Nothing on this island stays buried.” was a coincidence…it’ll all come around.
Ben/Juliet in the Pearl confirmed using Kate and Sawyer to manipulate Jack into performing the surgery.
Sun/Charlie/Sawyer was pretty low-key, I don’t think we’ve seen the end of it.
Spiders freak me out, a lot, so I’ll be sure to skip that scene on my 2nd viewing.

I highly doubt this episode will draw 300+ comments, ala last week, but I look forward to reading what everyone else has to say!

31. Erin says:

I think what Locke said about things not staying buried will prove to be true… I just wonder if Nikki and Paulo will get dug up before they suffocate under all that dirt. It was a pretty deep grave. I hope they’re gone for good. They were both pretty crap actors.

I’m curious about the walkie-talkie. Will they be able to use it to communicate with the Losties who are currently in Otherville?

What was it that Paulo said to Nikki about they should have taken Ethan’s help (instead of Artz’s info on the trajectory)? They seemed awfully friendly with him…

32. froggirl says:

I think there is the possibility that someone will come back to try to dig up some of the diamonds and save them.

Or maybe Vincent will dig them up?

I was wondering about the pilot scenes too. I mean, there’s no way they’d be able to afford to re-shoot a scene like that, is there? Anyone who has the DVD’s check to see if Nikki is running around?

33. Toeknee says:
Becky, i was also curious about how they shot those scenes. It amazes me that they knew this story of Paolo/Nikki halfway through season 2 when they placed Paolo in the bathroom.
I think they used CGI effects to insert Nikki into some of the scenes from the Pilot episode (and maybe some subsequent episodes), and then they re-created the crash scene for some of the other bits with Nikki and Paolo.

Regarding Paolo’s trip to the bathroom – that was actually in one of the first 6 episodes of this season. (although it does seem like a loooooonnnng time ago!) So the writers didn’t plan THAT far ahead. :)

34. DocH says:

What did Nikki say as she was going catatonic. Opening sequence.
Sawyer – she said “plywood”
Hurley – she said “power lines”
Hurley – she said “Paolo lies”
End of show
Nikki – “paralyzed”!

35. Liz says:

Shout out to Mike re FORBIDDEN PLANET–yes! love that movie, and I’ve thought that there’s lots of elements of it in LOST, too.
Re: tonight’s episode–I thought it was stupid and mean. MEAN to bury your characters alive–pointless, and not fun. Beyond the irony aspects of the ‘falling out among theives’ thang, WHY did we spend time with these people only to kill them off? There is so much I like about LOST but this ep. doesn’t contain any of it. Please don’t even try to say there is some kind of grand purpose at work here–not buying it. This kind of story would work well as a one-off twilight zone irony episode. Were they worried about jumping the shark here? IMO, they’ve come really close. Hanging by a fin! Last week’s ep, fantastic. This week, uh, no. Though that tear coming down Paolo’s cheek before paralysis–sniffle. (Doesn’t hurt that he’s Adorable.) All right, so now I finally CARE about them, the murdering theives, and well, what? They’re dead. So. Well. Hmm. Thanks for making me care FOR NO REASON! How gothic. Gothic Island of Dr. Moreau-Forbidden Planet-Twilight Zone dead. The body count rises, the fun diminishes. Zombies will be next.

PS–Paolo & Nikki didn’t have to KILL the old dude, they could’ve just knocked him out and stolen the goods. So, did the story decision to make them murderers make it acceptable that they ended up buried alive? Was The Island judging them when The Monster Sound came and the spider bit Nikki? Did the backwards storytelling, insert the two newbies into the backstory (which didn’t really work with the Tailies story-telling of yesteryear, at least not for me) work here? No, Yes, No.

36. Fluca says:

You guys heard it too right? The “smoke monsters’ noise” right before all the male spiders appeared and bit Nikki… Any thoughts on that?

As for the episode itself, I found it pretty funny, since the writers/producers managed to gave us exactly what we’ve been asking for, all the while poking fun at the audience by making the two find out about a great deal of important secrets way before the other losties (and yet, they were made to be so wrapped up with the diamonds, that they simply did not care). I thought that showed the writers’ sarcastic vein at its best.

Another funny bit: Paolo’s line: “If I go up there that thing is going to fall”, totally calling Boone’s death a long time before it actually happened…

Also, Sawyer, again, perfectly embodied the audience by saying “who the hell are you/them” at least a couple of times…

Cheers

37. Adam says:

“that was actually in one of the first 6 episodes of this season. (although it does seem like a loooooonnnng time ago!) So the writers didn’t plan THAT far ahead. :)”

Haha I suppose so. See I started watching LOST late when i bought season 1 and wtahced it straight rhough WHILE Season 2 was playing. it is only this season that im watching with everyone else. So my sense of timing is off. lol.

Its so much better to just magically watch the next episode. I hate this whole… commercial and waiting one week for each episode thing…

38. Erin says:

I totally agree! None of us liked them, we all complained about them… So the writers/producers listened and gave us what we wanted. While it wasn’t as awesome as The Man from Tallahassee, it was still pretty good. And we got to see lots of Sawyer. I love Sawyer!

39. DocH says:

re: by saying “who the hell are you”.
———–
Yep, 3 times, first to Nikki, then Paolo, then Nikki again.

40. Erin says:

Sorry, just realized you can quote and reply. I copied/pasted which is why it looks like I said exactly the same thing as Fluca…

41. Lesley says:

Liz, I think they killed the guy because they did not want to get caught and did not plan to crash on the island. It was ruled natural causes, ight? Also, I am guessing that there is a real possibility one or both are not dead. Good point that Vincent is around and might help to dig them out. It was great to see Dr. Arzt again too. I wonder how the radio is going to come in handy in the days to come?

42. Fluca says:

I’m not sure if you guys have watched it, but there is this episode of South Park where Kenny does NOT to die, and throughout the show he keeps, somehow, managing to avoid dangerous situation after dangerous situation…

This is very much alike what happened to Paolo: By not choosing to go with Ethan to the forest; by not asking him for help; by not climbing to the plane; by meeting the others and escaping to tell (or not) the story; by being bitten by a venomous spider…
But here, sadly (well, not really) he ended up being buried alive at the end :)

43. Toeknee says:

And once he said to Hurley, “Who’s Nikki?”

44. JoshSpazJosh says:

Hurley’s eulogy was hilarious, but the wrath of the monster . . . oh man. Shows you what you get for greed.

45. Seamus says:

I bet Sawyer will regret throwing the diamonds and will try to dig them out. One of the characters will have survived (hopefully Nikki).
We need a girl for Sawyer now that Kate is into Jack again

46. DocH says:

Juliet & Ben in the Pearl Hatch (sounds like CLUE). Talking how to bring Jack into the fold. Mention that they can get him regarding his “Emotional Investment”. Their quick answer – “Michael”. Maybe that is how they bring Michael (Perrineau) back, later on in S4.

47. DocH says:
Shannon said in a tizzy, “STOP FLIRTING WITH RANDOM GUYS!”. I think we have it… Boone was outed.
————–
Correction – “QUIT FLIRTING WITH RANDOM GUYS!”, seconds later… Nik to Pao “I HOPE WE DON’T END UP LIKE THEM”… [and that would be DEAD - and out of an acting gig]!

48. Tailie in 42C says:

though mildly entertaining – on the level of tricia tanaka – no big Q’s were A’d tonight, kind of like insulating foam in a hollow wall. it just filled the gaps somewhat. they didn’t jump the shark tonight, but they did ski dangerously close to the shark, and almost fell in. in the words of the fonz – whoa – aayyy!

49. Smileyme says:

I thought it was a great episode, the who-done-it/ murder mystery thing sort of pulled us back from the crazyness of the last few episodes. And the ties with the first season were cool, even if they were seemingly poinless to the movement of the story. I had missed Shannon and Boone.

50. avalanche says:

I don’t think the show has jumped the shark but Fonzie put on the water skis. I agree with everyone that there were some plot advancements(ie: walkie talkie)but couldn’t this have been done without the sense of artificiality. I hope they are dead but if they comeback the writer’s need to give us some really solid reasons for revisiting their own past work. Adam and eve? Could Sawyer be genuine in his “I don’t know who you are” theatrics–it seemed clue worthy that he says it so many times!

The only interesting scene was in the pearl. And here,Juliette seemed to have her poker face on! She didn’t lead us away from the jack ambiguity at all! Is she just as manipulative of Jack as Ben is?

Last point–I don’t think the smoke monster came from somebody’s id. The “cerberus vents” on the map lead me to believe that it was built to guard something(like its namesake) and even has special access ports to the underbelly of the island.

51. cakey says:

I really liked this episode, much to my surprise! Never liked Paulikki, found them being in the show irritating, but loved the story tonight in spite of myself. This episode reminded me of a Stephen King short story where a guy gets bit by a snake and ends up totally paralyzed and taken for dead. It’s called “autopsy” and you can imagine what happens to the protagonist…I actually felt bad for Paulo when he cried. Don’t think they are dead at all. We’ll see in a few episodes from now!

52. Tasha says:

I was also thinking about Adam and Eve since they were holding hands at the end.

What was the point of Boone and Shannon in this episode??

I am not sure what to make of this episode but that it was surprising? All that was totally not expected! Them getting it wrong about what she is saying…”I’m Paralyzed.” I didn’t see any of that coming. Then getting buried alive, that is like the worst death ever!

53. Kathryne says:

Liked the episode! When Sawyer got out the black bag and Sun poured the contents into her hand, I yelled, “It’s the black and white stones!!!” I for sure thought they were somehow going to be the Adam and Eve in the caves with the stones in the bag.. But apparently, they aren’t dead yet, so we will see.

No. They already used Michael to lure Jack, Kate, Sawyer, and Hurley to the trap that led to their capture.

Exactamundo! – they were in the Pearl talking about how to get Jack… that is what they did – use Michael. The whole show said “84 days ago” “72 days ago” “54 days ago” “30 something days ago” “6 days ago” “8 hours ago” I won’t vouch for the exact ‘days ago’ above but the Juliet/Ben speech was XX # of days ago, and that is when they decided to use Michael to nab Jack. Which they did sometime around day 65 on the island.

Another Nik/Pao side note “we are going to miss Thanksgiving”! There is a date clue that says “less than day 60″ or so on the island.

56. DocH says:

Clarification – re: Bringing Michael back – I did not mean to “get Jack Again”. I meant – to get the actor back on the show in a backstory. We never really saw fully how they turned Michael. So a flashback next season could really demonstrate how Ben/Jul really turned Michael – that backstory on day #60-something would likely involve a huge reveal on what they are doing with the kids too – plus a Walt return to the series.

57. Terry says:

Everybody is on this island for a reason, no one is by chance, i think we can say that pretty clearly, all have their purpose in the plot and the plot of the others, numbers, hatches, wheelchairs, korean mobsters, it will all come together, it was not just about jack.

58. XtraCripsy says:

1. If you’re paralyzed to the point that it’s not apparent that your diaphragm is moving air in and out of your lungs, you’ll be dead in 3 minutes after you have irreversible brain damage. (This might not be a great loss for Skankki and Froggo.) It doesn’t matter that your heart is beating imperceptibly–your blood is not being oxygenated. I think DL and CC saw this used in The Illusionist, and figured it had a scientific basis.

2. Now that DL and CC have either killed off or exiled all gays, hispanics, and blacks, will we find out that Jacob is Rush Limbaugh? (Don’t mention Hurley or Sayid who act as white as the rest of the cast.) The main form of recreation on the island is golf? They should rename the show, “Mysterious Gated-Community Island.”

3. A commenter on another forum said that Shannon has a dog face. I kinda see that now. Some would say…Juliet looks like a tranny. Is Jack in store for a Crying Game moment in a future episode? BTW, it’s a damn shame I don’t write for this show.

4. Yeah, it’s gonna turn out that this is an underground snow globe island sitting on top of a big honking magnet that creates a portal to quantum parallel universes when it’s not breaking up airliners. Smokey is a Michael Crichton nanobot, and Ben’s big box is a ripoff of Solaris. These are the “scientific” phenomena that this series is supposedly based on? MacGyver made more sense.

5. Patchy ain’t dead yet. The foaming of the mouth and the blood coming out of the ears is just a temporary thing. I don’t think the Others are so quick to bury their own, unlike SOME folks. Besides, you could clearly see that he was breathing in his last scene.

59. Bobbi says:

FMGreenSteve-I agree, I cracked up every time Sawyer asked who they were!

I did figure it was spiders very early on-right after the conversation with Artz, but I still think it was well done. I also don’t think Ben would get caught like that…unless he wanted to. Perhaps he planted the walkie talkie on purpose for Paolo to find it. Maybe it’s bugged-that’s how they get alot of information.

I also think it’s possible that Vincent will dig them up-or maybe later on they will find their bodies, and determine that they attempted to dig themselves out but couldn’t!

I found it very interesting that Nikki pleads with Paolo-”Please promise me that we won’t end up like them!”-about Boone and Shannon, and yet, they got stuck on island, and ventually buried-nice!

Someone said maybe if Nikki and Sawyer come back, they could be Adam and Eve-so I have a question. Didn’t Adam and Eve have those stones in a little black bag like the diamonds?-or is my memory twisted again?-If so, did Sawyer dump the bag in there-or keep it for himself?-Is Sawyer Adam?

I swear early on in the episode, I thought I saw Nikki breath in the background-I chalked it up to editing-but now maybe not. Perhaps they’re breathing was only slowed, and they were both only checked for death once, nobody
continued to watch them.-So maybe not brain-dead-XtraCripsy

Yeah – a real shame (our loss).

61. Ro-zgee says:

The next morning our Losties wake up to a hole in the ground where the grave used to be. They start disappearing one by one and finally realize there is an army of flesh eating zombies taking over the island, being helped by a cloud of alien insects. Des is the last one left and realizes that the zombies/black cloud can’t cross water so he builds a raft and lives on it until they all die off for lack of fresh meat. He lives alone until Pen finally arrives on her own boat, but they can’t get away from the island. They circle for years and then finally set up a simple life in the caves. They die together holding hands and peaceful. 50 years later a meteorite hits the island dead on, knocking it through a wormhole back about 100 years. The meteor contains insect eggs from its parent planet.
I love this show!!

No offense, but in the real universe, which is not to say LOST takes place there, even if they’re alive going into the hole, they get smothered by all the dirt. Unless Vincent is an uber-UBER dog and can whisk away four feet of dirt in exactly the right spot in under ten minutes…sorry, Paolo and Nikki have met their nasty demise.

Oh, wait! If only they’d dug a little deeper! There, under the exact spot where the gang chose to bury them, a tunnel linking to another underground hatch. Nikki squirms, kicks her heels, smack! hits the secret release button and N&P fall into the tunnel. Gasping, choking, still alive, they get out from under all the dirt and crawl through the dark to the secret chamber, conveniently stocked with Dharma goodies. Stuck underground due to the tunnel collapse, they use the diamonds to drill through the sides of the chamber (can that happen? does it matter?) and find their way to the surface. Unfortunately, Hurley is joy riding in the VW at that exact moment, and runs them over.

Oh, the tragedy of it all!

Expose–light on the mythology, but still one of the most enjoyable hours of TV that I’ve seen in a long time. It was like this perfectly formed little murder mystery, with a nice little twist at the end that left me absolutely satisfied.

I think it’s great how the writers actually used the fact that everybody hates Nikki and Paolo to their advantage. Someone already mentioned Sawyer never remembering their names, but I don’t think anyone mentioned the flashback, in which Nikki gets killed of on Expose, and then tells her “boyfriend” that she doesn’t mind dying since “she’s just a minor character.”

Then again, does the old guy offering to bring her back to life mean that Nikki and Paolo won’t stay in the ground? I hope not.

Ya’ll are cracking me up! I really enjoyed this episode. Not my favorite, but I’m not complaining. I too hope N&P are gone for good. I think the backstory was brilliant! As for Shannon’s and Boone’s reappearance, I think it just shows the neverending connection between the Losties. They have all crossed paths at some point. The little nods to the audience throughout were great! I wondered too about Shannon chastising Boone for flirting with random guys. I thought I heard it wrong but I guess not! Hmmm… I hope Sun can find it in her heart to forgive Charlie & Sawyer. I think she will keep it to herself, though. It seems to me like the Losties are starting to turn on each other. Their unity is breaking down. I guess 80+ days stranded on an island will do that to ya!

66. adriennez says:

I was really wondering how they inserted N&P into the crash scenes…computer magic or reshot or what. I was a little annoyed with the tie it together scenes up until when Locke, Sayid, etc. were in the Pearl station and Paolo was in the bathroom and came out and they all looked at him…I guess that caught things up to what we had remembered from more recent episodes.

About the crash scene through N&P’s eyes…when she found him, he was by the beach staring out at the horizon and she had to get his attention…he looked like he had seen something or maybe it was just he was in shock by the scene unfolding before them? I started to feel by some of Paolo’s comments through the episodes that maybe he had a similar ability to Desmond and that he could see flashes of future happenings…when they find the plane in the trees and she wants him to go up and he says that if he does it will fall and he will die(or is it just common sense?). Maybe he just has the feeling that she wants to get rid of him(like she did with the old guy). Maybe he had a flash about the plane crashing and wanted to be stuck with Nik on the island. This is digging way back but remember when Claire was pregnant and going to give the baby up for adoption to someone in L.A. and went to the psychic. He saw something and wanted her to be on the Oceanic flight(and on the island?) because the baby wouldn’t have been safe with the adoptive parents in L.A. The idea that some people knew the plane was going to crash…I don’t know…I am probably just reading too much into some of these things but who knows with this show!!

I was wondering if anyone could give me any thoughts or info into something else…I have looked for it all over the place and I know we aren’t supposed to keep repeating info here but I just could not find anything about it. Here it is…did anyone notice that Kelvin from the hatch was the same American Army officer that ordered Sayid to torture his fellow countrypeople for information, back in a Sayid-centric flashback last season? Is there a discussion about this anywhere? Thanks and sorry if I am bringing up something already discussed!!

Locke told Paulo when he first tried to bury the diamonds, that the tide is washing away the shore, so he should bury it elsewhere.

A large tidal wave could wash away the dirt above their graves…the Black Rock somehow got washed up and dumped on the middle of the island…or did it?

But then all the graves may be unearthed, and that would be gruesome indeed.

Nicki was wearing skimpy clothing, Eve looked fully clothed. Also, read:
http://www.lostpedia.com/wiki/Adam_and_Eve

Clever how Vincent pulled sheet off, to show people these guys were not dead. He will probably unbury them – big dog, fast mover.

Did everyone’s screen blackout for a moment towards the last few seconds? I’m hoping it’s just what it ‘looks like’ to be buried alive, and not my tv or station going haywire…

Theory:
Black Rock people purged the indigenous islanders, slave ship surviviors become the ‘Others’ who purge Dharma. Losties purge Others and Othersville becomes Lostiville. Our friends get purged by next wave of ‘immigrants’.

(per The Lost Experience:

The Black Rock was owned by Magnus Hanso, ‘magnus’ meaning ‘great’ in latin…like ‘him?’. If Ben is his decsendant, and Dharma was founded by Alvar Hanso, somehow someone figured out how to get off the island, but come back for it’s ‘special properties’, and other people were easily recruited because ‘they love the island, and want to protect it’, per Ben. Everyone knows everyone.

Unanswered:
-Who really was the real Henry Gale?
-How come the Black Rock slaves are skeletons, but all the other dead people found are mummies (and the Marshall decomposed so fast).
-Where are all the insects, mold, fungus, disease, vermin and other critters?
-Ben was not staring at Alex’s pictures in his apartment, he was staring at his clock, making it do….?
-Paulo and Nicki weren’t that bad to have afterall, come on, at least last night they were entertaining. But if you have diamonds, wouldn’t you want to escape from an island in order to cash them in, and wouldn’t finding hatches and other people be a way to figure out how to do this? So, why did they blatantly ignore all this technology…
-Spiders sounded like monster…paralysis…good security system.

Well, I think we saw as much as were going to see with how they turned Michael – they captured him, didn’t let him see Walt until after a few days, and then offered to let him get Walt back and let the two of them leave the island. In return Michael somehow had to free Ben and bring Jack, Sawyer, Kate and Hurley back to them.

Bobbi: Any agent that cause paralysis of the respiratory muscles is deadly. That’s how botulism kills.

People who can survive with little or no respiration are usually in situations of hypothermia. They fall into ice cold water. And, children generally have a better outcome than adults. The coldness slows down their metabolism, and therefore their oxygen demand is less. This is what allows them to survive.

This show is supposed to have a scientific basis.

But, if the island has mystical healing powers, as well as allowing travel between parallel quantum universes, then this series is more about fantasy than even sci fi. Not scientific at all. In other words, expect to see Paulikki again.

Apologies to all the Rush fans. But I’m sure he would think that was funny.

Even DL and CC apologized in advance on their podcast for the wig they had to put on Boone in this episode. It’s okay to point out the deficiencies on the show.

Let’s put a ban on references to jumping the shark. Not every show is going to be awesome. And this episode won’t even come close to killing the show.

I think the Ben/Juliette scene showed that Ben doesn’t control some “magic box”. He’s just a great manipulator.

We also have more con artists on the show. Seems like there was a “con artist convention” going on in Australia mate.

Yep, somehow one or both will be saved from the hole. I know the writers played into our hands, but that was too easy.

I think the radio was written in because this is how they will learn that everyone in the rescue party has been captured (waiting to see what’s up with Danielle).

Funny how the valuable stuff ends up in the waterfall pond. Wonder what else is in there?

73. Liz says:
I don’t think the show has jumped the shark but Fonzie put on the water skis.
LOL, Good one! And I agree.

This show has ‘flashes before your eyes’ all right, flashes of brilliance (last episode) and flashes of stupidity (this one and all the ‘lets bring in new characters so we can kill them’ storytelling.)

Honestly, honestly, how many people really think they’ve got a PLAN? And everything is so neatly tied together so that the PLAN unfolds to perfection? Flashes, again. Some of it, yes, you can see it in the writing. Some of it, there is a big ‘whoops! that’s going nowhere, let’s kill off someone so we don’t write ourselves into a corner’ thing going on.

It’s fluid, it’s television, it’s thinking on the fly–nothing wrong with trying things, making mistakes, burying them. Ahem.

But here’s my fear. So much lovely, quirky, interesting stuff, the big set up for a mythological arc with a great payoff, and then…the storyline fails a la x-files, Twin Peaks, with a flat, hunh?, what?!?!? oh Lord I have been wasting my time finish. I hope not, but…I can see it in the wind. Or in Desmond’s flashes.

And, one more thing, isn’t it a little scary that the writers wrote an episode as a kind of treat for the fans (the ones who hated Nikki & Paolo, at least)? A wink and a nod, hey, that’s fun and cute and adds to the whole experience. But when you tap on that fourth wall between fiction and the audience, its real risky. You risk losing people who aren’t ‘in’ on the jokes, you risk annoying people who wonder why you’re wasting time with go-nowhere storytelling, and you risk the worst one, people losing interest.

Remember when the X-Files did their comedy episodes? They were really brilliant and entertaining, especially for a show that took itself so seriously much of the time. Plus, David Duchovny has wicked smart timing. This episode of LOST felt like it was TRYING for that sensibility, but it didn’t get there. IMO.

This idea is pretty cool. It reminds of this other island in the (real) South Pacific called Palmerston. The island was “discovered” by Captain Cook and some of his crew remainded there and populated the island. It could make a lot of sense in terms of the Black Rock

Early on, they had no reason to think the survivors would find things in the hatches. Remember when they found the others customes in a hatch?

As much a people want to believe episodes like “Trisha..” and “Expose” are useless, they still have much writing integrity.

76. Andreas says:

While I found the episode to be pretty entertaining the writing was not exactly top notch and much of the story felt a bit contrived.

I’m pretty much convinced that Nikki and/or Paulo will get out of the grave or that their burial will have some impact on the later events of the story. Otherwise I’m going to be a bit disappointed about the writers including them in the story at all.

Also, I think something might be wrong with the timeline. Locke was clearly watching the episode of “Exposé” that Nikki starred in before his father pushed him out the window. Correct me if I’m wrong, but Locke was paralyzed for 4 years before the plane crash, but Nikki recorded the episode just before she left Australia… so how could Locke watch an episode that wouldn’t be shot until 3-4 years later? Of course, it could have been that Locke was watching a previous episode where they talked about “the cobra” so I might be wrong.

Just a thought, but I thought that Hurley’s comment verified the dates by saying something to the effect of “he was Cobra all along”. Hurley was a big fan of Expose and likely would have already known that if it aired 4 years ago.

81. Shoegirl says:

I think this ws a fantastic ep. 1. Nikki siad “Paralyze” not “pablo lies’ which would still be good because he lied about the diamonds. 2. Vincent knew that’s why he uncovered the bodies. 3. They are definitely alive.Either they will get buried alive or they will get washed up when the tide comes in like Locke said “nothing stays buried”

There is someone on the island who looks good but is really the “COBRA”! Maybe LOCKE is SMOKEY!

I look forward to Season 4.

1. Nothing stays burried on the island. (Could other characters come back?) -Does that include secrets as well?
2. Boone has been outed(?)
3. There are tones of new (undiscovered)species on the island. Maybe that has something to do with Dharma’s interest in it?
4. This last one may be a bit of a stretch, but maybe? Nikki’s old director friend said he would get her an engagement ring as soon as ..something about “as soon as my wife…”. I assume he was going to say “gives me a divorce”, or “signes the divorce papers..”. Anyway, since there was going to be a wealthy divorcee, might not Locke’s father (aka the real Sawyer) be somehow conncted to the story? After all, it would fit his pattern. Also, he could be aware of the diamonds and thus have had a reason to be on the plane. It certainly would make Nikki and Paolo important, and create yet another connection.

I noticed that, too, and wondered about it. For a minute I thought he might have been married to Cassidy (the mother of Sawyer’s kid) because she said she got $600,000 in her divorce. But the timing’s off for that. But I do think the old guy’s wife has to tie in somehow, otherwise that comment is unnecessary. And I still wonder about Cassidy’s ex, $600,000 is a lot to get in a divorce.

89. Hammer says:

MKS – I was thinking TMFT may have been in Australia because the director’s wife is the widow he was doing the con on. It would have given him a reason to be on the plane, but the time line doesn’t fit.

Although, I guess she could have been next in his sights. Which would set up the connection how Ben got his hands on him.

90. shauna says:

I loved it! What a treat for the hardcore fans. Watching the flashback scenes from the beginning of their journey, whether original or cgi, was like a fun trip down memory lane. Kind of like watching old home movies. I also definitely picked up on Nikki’s line at the beginning about being a guest character so of course she would get killed. Too funny. I really doubt that they have some deeper meaning. I think they were brought on to try and sex things up and then the backlash from the fans forced them to be written out and this was an clever and amusing way to expose some other details as well as get rid of them (all of which were mentioned previously). It also furthers the idea of “you’ll get what’s coming to you”. I could be wrong though and they may get out of that hole. If so, can’t wait for Damon’s infamous “zombie season”!

91. Hammer says:

Oh wait. Maybe the director’s wife is Libby? Wasn’t she a widow of a rich man?

92. Toeknee says:

I thought the old man was going to say “as soon as my wife dies”. He seemed to have no fear of her walking in and catching him and Nikki, so I assume she’s on her death bed in a hospital or something.

93. shauna says:

As far as the wife of the old guy goes, what about Boone and Shannon’s mom? Can’t remember much about her except that they were rich and it could help explain their presence.

94. scottc13 says:

The most interesting thing I took from this episode is the way Ben and Juliet were dressed when they were in the Pearl. Why do they dress like Refugees when they are anywhere but Otherville? Are they using it as some sort of intimidation factor? Or are they possibly trying to look like another faction that may also be inhabiting the island?

If they are so civilized, and living in comfort, what’s the reason for the front?

95. Hammer says:

shauna – maybe, I think the timeline won’t fit for it to be Libby either. How does the timeline work for when Shannon dad died?

96. Erin says:

Seamus wrote:
We need a girl for Sawyer now that Kate is into Jack again

1. I think Kate has always been confused by her feelings for Sawyer and Jack. She knows that Sawyer is more right for her, but is conflicted (esp. as Jack keeps playing the hero).

2. Sawyer would never go for Nikki. She’s an idiot, and not at all like Kate (who he is v. obviously in love with)

97. Erin says:

Shannon’s dad died in the accident that paralyzed Jack’s wife. That had to have been at least a few years ago.

98. Hammer says:

Your right, plus his name is Howie, Shannon’s dad was Adam.

99. Hurley's Dad says:

What, no one has an anagram for “Howard Zuckerman” yet? :)

First, never really understood the hatred by most lost viewers for Paulikki. Considering neither were hard on the eyes (at least from what my female friends say), I never saw a problem with adding them in. Plus we really never knew their storyline until tonight, so all of that pre-judging was premature.

Second, I LOVE these episodes, maybe more than the explosion ones. The writers like to put in a lot of Easter Eggs in these “fillers”. Stuff like the walkie-talkie, Locke’s “nothing stays buried”, Old Howie’s “as soon as my wife…” Vincent knowing what’s going on, it was awesome.

Was a little worried about JTS (since Hammer said we can’t use Jumping the Shark anymore) when Lando shot the stripper, but I guess it all worked out in the end.

A couple other little things I noticed. A Florida connection has been mentioned to some of the characters. Last night there was a second Minnesota reference too. Henry Gale (the actual) is from Wayzata, and Corvette (aka Nikki) hailed from St. Paul. Probably means nothing, but something else to look for.

100. Hurley's Dad says:

Oh….almost forgot. Somebody’s going to dig up Paulikki and either find them alive or that they tried to get out. There was very little reason for Sawyer to dump the diamonds in there. Someone (can’t figure out who yet) is going to go in there after them.

101.
…No! Especially since Hurley is Hispanic, Jin and Sun are Korean, Sayid is Arabic are all still main characters…stop it already!
Maybe his wife is Ms. Hawking (the jeweler lady from “Flashes Before Your Eyes”). That’d be fun!

102. Hammer says:

Thanks for JTS, it’s just so cliche anymore.

Another thing that struck me was Ethan was wearing a Wisconnsin shirt. I don’t remember him wearing that back in season one. Wonder if it’s an easter egg?

I agree with your comments about paralyzed duo. Once again we were lead to believe they were useless dim wits. But, turns out they are accomplished cons/murderers. Also, Nikki showed quick wit by using the spider to get her stash. Her only mistake was forgetting about the ferromones(sp).

103. MKS says:

I assumed that the divorcee to be was not necessarily someone that we know, but rather another woman being conned by Locke’s dad (maybe). She would only have been a widow for a few days, so no widows that we have seen could have been Mrs. Zuckermann. That, however, does not mean she is not connected.

Also, the diamonds were hidden inside a russian nesting doll, a rather unusual place. Is there some connection to the Russian?

Maybe the Others knew the existence of the Swan, but not the importance of it. There isn’t a working television for the computer room in the swan, and there doesn’t seem to be any audio in the Pearl. They can see bits of the swan, but can’t hear the inhabitants.

Paulo & Nikki found the Pearl before the plane fell on it. He already knew the location.

I think someone is going to dig up the diamonds – not in time to save them but they will see that N&P were not dead when buried.

114. STEPHANIE says:

This episode was really bad. The old burried alive bit – I can’t believe the same group of writers that has kept me so interested so long came up with this. The characters were not very interesting to watch, and I kept thinking, who cares? I was sad to see the diamonds go in the grave, because I have a bad feeling that they will be dug up at some point, much like the while burried alive concept. I’m sure there are some fans who enjoyed this sort of episode, but for me, it just brought back the frustration of similar episodes on the X-files, when instead of solving the big mysteries, they would spend a whole episode chasing a vampire or something. I think this episode did jts for the viewers who tune in for the original writing and the love of watching the plot reveal itself. The crash scene however, very powerful. I really hope the writiers will leave this whole thing brried and go back to the characters and plot that we care about. As an aside, the discussion between Ben and Juliette. It made me wonder if the whole thing between her and Jack was an elaborate scam to make Jack care about her.

115. SpinPapi says:

EXPOSE…we may have gotten more info out of this ep than any previous one. does not imply relevance, however! some of the things exposed:

- Boone as gay (yay!) or at least liking men (aww) or just being teased (boo!)
- Nikki and Paulo as con artists (don’t confuse this for “smart”)
- Paulo evading death at every turn (Desmond linkup?)
- Dr Artz as Charles Darwin (and breast lover)
- Ethan as Wisconsin fan (and careless whisperer about the plane)
- Juliet as attracted to Jack
- Ben as “out” manipulator/exploiter
- Underground tunnels to pearl station as Others’ means of transit
- the security system as able to manifest creatures (or at least con victims)
- Vincent as life saver (see http://www.lostpedia.com/wiki/Retrieversoftruth.com)
- …so many more, but I can’t type all day at work! =]

but the BIGGEST thing, I thought, to come out of this episode…and why it was so important…is that it exposed what the island is, the whole premise of the show. the island is the BOX (TV). Ben doesn’t understand it but tries to harness it for what he thinks is good. Locke doesn’t understand it, but he knows enough…you gotta play to win!!!

whatever WE wish for, happens! sure they have an ending in mind (adam and eve or steve or two eves…who knows?) but they ARE taking us for a wild and crazy ride in the unfolding of the plot. they’ve peppered fan stuff into the episodes before, but they’ve never been this blatant: you want Nikki and Paolo to die? *bampf!* you got it! =]

They took Walt because he was special, but perhaps also to lure Michael to them (via the instant messaging on the Swan hatch computer). They used Michael to help them capture Jack, Sawyer and Kate. Once they had Jack, the idea was to use Juliet to convince Jack to do the surgery. Ben pointed out to Jack that Juliet resembles Jack’s ex-wife. This is what he was talking about with Juliet in the Pearl Station – he manipulates people by finding out what they’re emotionally invested in, and Jack is emotionally invested in his ex-wife.

I believe Jack was trying to save someone’s live and had send Boone to look for a pen to use as a breathing apparatus. I think it was just used to tie Nikki into the story more.

In the pilot, Jack sent Boone to get a pen so that he could open Rose’s wind pipe. They made that scene to make it look authentic.

130. Lesley says:

Lostpedia has a shot of the newspaper that Paulo was reading in the airport and it is dated 2 days after the crash! Timing is coming into play more and more. I also agree with the comment above, Paulo appeared to be focused on something after the crash when Nikki was desperately trying to get his attention. What did he see? In additon, there were many shots of Paulikkis’ faces throughout the entire episode. I agree there were a lot of easter eggs here and they will likely play out before the finale in May. Looking forward to finding more with a second viewing.

Libby’s hubby died so she gave Desmond the boat years before the crash.

Howard Zuckerman died 4 days before the crash. I don’t see how they could be related.

I would think (although this is a stretch too) if we’ve “met” his wife already, Claire’s Mom is the best candidate. But they weren’t rich, so it’s probably not her either.

132. Tina says:

According to lostpedia, Libby actually had three husbands, but she only references one, David who died after being sick (which is how Desmond ends up with her sailboat). The director may have been one the three.

133. herxanthikles says:

Here’s my question:

The monster, that sinister instrument of quasi-justice, has now killed Eko, Paulo, and Nikki, all of whom were murderers. So what was up with it killing the pilot in the first episode? Are we going to get Greg Grunberg on loan from Heroes to find out he was in fact, a man with a past?

134. Hurley's Dad says:

From Lostpedia…”After warning Paulo against smoking near the safe because leaving ashes could implicate them, Nikki opens and loots the safe bare-handed.”

This brings up the cigarette in the Pearl NEXT TO the walkie-talkie. Did Paulo leave an “implicating” cig butt in there, so Ben and Juliet ended up knowing someone was there? Is that why they “left” the walkie-talkie?

135. joseph and the corrector of all stupid lost fakes says:

first and foremost the monster did not kill nikki and paulo they were paralized as we see in that episode when she opens her eyes secondly the reason boone askes nikki for a pen is because in the first episode jack ask him for it to heal a patient if you go see that episode it will show

michael and walt found safety and i believe if they are back. one hugo will kill michael. two walts powers will definetly be of some great disaster to the island. and three they will be like desmond and maybe realize their in a bit of a snow globe.

138. Erin says:

Locke’s father turned out to be a con artist (conned John to get the kidney, and was working a con with a wealthy woman he was planning to marry when he pushed John out the window)
He seems the right age and it’s likely he did the same con with Sawyer’s mom. We are all assuming he’s the real Sawyer at the moment. Waiting for confirmation in a future episode!

139. Joel says:

Some are focusing on the director having a “rich” wife. Perhaps that is not the real issue. Just having a wife complicated any fantasies he had about Nikki. If his wife were no longer married to him, he would then be free to have a public engagement to Nikki. I think that is what he was getting at just before he died. So his wife may have been one of the (ordinary) ladies suggested in previous posts.

140. samsandrasan says:

Well, it took awhile to read all those posts. Hammer, I forgot about the pheromones. What I heard sounded like what sound techs would use to sound like a thousand spiders – not the smoke monster. My take on it is that it was just the pheromones not Smokey. Everyone has mentioned the things that I was wondering (“my wife”; the cigarette; brilliant Vincent; Paulo staring into the sky) so I won’t rehash. One little thing – Why would they show a close up of the cast list of the Expose script? Is there a name there we should note?

Oh, why couldn’t Sun have punched Charlie?!

Listen again. Same “tickatickatick tickatickatick.” I just compared with when Smokey appears to Eko to kill him with Paolo and Nikki. Definitely the same sound.

144. herxanthikles says:

That was really hideous grammar and quoting there, sorry. Let me rephrase for clarity:

Listen again. Same “tickatickatick tickatickatick.” I just compared the sound right before when Nikki gets it to the sound Smokey makes when he appears to Eko before killing him. Definitely the same sound.

145. Hammer says:

It doesn’t make sense. Why would Smokey have been there for? The spiders came because of the pheromones, Paolo grabbed Nikki’s shoulder with the spider guts to be sure she had the pheromones on her. They didn’t see visions or get killed by Smokey…I don’t think he was there, the sound was the spiders coming to the pheromones.

146. Ilovelost says:

This was an amazing episode. i loved seeing shannon and boone again. they were my favorite characters. the writers are so talented, like when nikki’s boss was like we can always bring you back. also, when locke was like to paulo “nothing stays buried here”. The writers also did fun little jokes “you know what happens to guess stars”. all in all this was the best episode. i wonder if they are really dead. oh freaky and scary… buried alive

147. Meg says:

Maybe, but I don’t think Ben would be one…why would a zombie need back surgery?

151. Meg says:

Yeah, I need to watch this one again. It sounded like Smokey the first time, but I wasn’t paying close attention to it. I was too busy freaking out from the spiders. I don’t like spiders.

152. herxanthikles says:

Well, it makes sense that Smokey was there in that Smokey’s beef with Eko was that he wouldn’t repent his sins. Paolo and Nikki are even less repentant about their crimes.

But on the other hand, you’re right that it doesn’t NEED Smokey to make sense. However, I just triple checked to be super sure and the sound that interrupts Nikki and Paolo’s conversation before the spiders come is absolutely Smokey’s sound. Looks like another mystery then.

And on a small point, Paolo didn’t look like he was in earshot of for the pheromone discussion, so I’m not sure that he was that Medusa-spider savvy to set up Nikki like that.

153. Hammer says:

I meant that the writers made sure she had pheromone on her by having Paolo grab her shoulder…not that he was doing any planning.

We’re gonna have to agree to disagree about Smokey.

154. samsandrasan says:

I don’t think he purposely smeared Nikki with spider guts. Divine justice perhaps.

155. Hammer says:

Awww come on guys, this is basic story writing here…the teacher tells her about the pheromones earlier in the show so that the viewers will know why the spiders come running at her…geez.

156. herxanthikles says:

Smokey proof cause I’m anal:

Compare sound in Expose 40:07-40:12 to Cost of Living 13:40-42, 14:05-7, 40:14-42, and of course 27:10-28ish of the 23rd Pslam. Same sound.

Perhaps the confusion could be that Smokey kind of makes two sounds, the “tickatickatak” sound and lower and more amorphous gurgle. Expose has the tickatickatack sound. And the spiders do make a sound as they crawl around. This is a different sound than the one we hear at 40:07-12, which is clearly the same sound as in the other cited Smokey sections.

157. Bobbi says:

cog-I loved that part too-Where Nicky says she’s just doing a guest appearance, and then he’s scrambling to come up with ideas on how to bring her back to life, nice.

I never liked Nikki and Paolo, but I will say, I really like the way they made it really show, how someone can be out of the spotlight and in the background, and turn out to be pretty dangerous. N&P were bad news, yet no one paid them any mind, love it. Really makes you think, if they can give N&P an entire backstory in one episode, what else is coming that we also could never predict!

Adriennez-also Kate’s step/adoptive dad was there at some point too, interesting links.

Monica-yeah it would be gruesome if all the graves came unburied, but not if the were no bodies, like Christian’s empty coffin!

I really felt as though the Ben/Juliet scene was to show the way they really interact when no one is supposedly seeing them…Juliet and Ben didn’t have all the tension that Jack sees when watching them all the time. She doesn’t seem intimidated or afraid at all, in fact they seem very team-like. Maybe Juliet is also manipulative-pretending she isn’t on same side as Ben. It also lets us know for sure that the Others knew all about all the hatches.

Andreas-I’m not sure it was the right episode of Expose that Locke was watching-I didnt hear the same lines-nothing about gold deposits, but Nikki’s episode was about money for an orphange, etc.

OK, I obviously missed the cigarette in the Pearl next to walkie-talkie, I do however remember a cigarette when the Losties go down there…can’t be same cigarette? Right? Timing would be off?

158. SpinPapi says:

I agree with Hammer on the pheromone thing. But the sound definitely matched Smokey’s previous noises.

As soon as the show ended, I sat there wondering for a while if the spiders really came to Nikki (really? there were that many of them? right there? just waiting for pheromones to cue their attack?), or if she just BELIEVED she was being bit and became paralyzed from that, because Smokey was manifesting itself as the spiders?

That may be a bit of a stretch, but stranger things have happened on the island. And this IS a very oldskool, “smite-the-sinners” kind of god monster!

159. Hurley's Dad says:

Anybody notice in the “Expose” portion with Lando, the two girls (Autumn and Crystal) that came running in when Lando shot Corvette were holding hands…………the ENTIRE time? Who runs into a room where three shots are fired holding hands?

It looked out of place to me. Maybe Autumn and Crystal are “Eve and Eve”? They (A&C) were both wearing black, Corvette was wearing white.

Or am I just trying to find things where there isn’t anything now?

Interesting names on the Expose scriptbook credits that Hurley is looking at in the episode while they search Nikki and Paulo’s tent. “Johnny C.” is the name of a goth, serial killer comic book from the 90′s where the character is also willing to murder “innocent” people who, in his twisted mind, deserve their fate for some reason or another. Thought that was kind of weird. Might just be coincidence, but why a character with only a 1 letter abbreviated last name?

Just listened (it will remain the 2 minutes of Lost that I will never see, spiders..eww) and I would be very surprised if it’s smokey. Didn’t sound like mechanical sounds to me.

Curious, how would you make a sound like 1000 male spiders galavanting through the jungle for a female?

Sounds like spring break to me. :)

166. Erin says:

I think the cheesy scene from Expose was just that. A bad tv show spoof, there to show you that Nikki was a bad actress. Even though none of our Losties realized she was bad news (so she could act a little bit!) I don’t think there’s any hidden significance in the scene we saw Nikki and Lando filming.

167. Oliver says:

I also think it was the monster causing the spiders to head for Nikki. In the episode earlier Hurley speculated that Eko meant Nikki and Paulo to be the next dead since both were there when he passed away. Meaning Eko did know that the monster is going to catch them both.

One thing that makes me wondering about this episode is the thing with the hatch of the pearl station. I’m sure Paolo left it open, so I guess Ben and Juilette must have recognized that someone is up there, maybe that was even the reason for her to feel uncomfortably and Ben leaving the Walkie-Talkie.

Beside that I like to say that I also read that short story by Stephen King and I remember it had a brief foreword where SK mentioned he had talked about it with venom specialists regarding the poison causing paralysis. So it seems to be really true, that this is possible. Not to forget that Artz said they were new species.

Also, the ending reminded me on Vincent Price movies. I’m almost sure that I have seen something like that before in one of his movies. In case anyone knows, let me know, same goes for any Poe reference.

I also don’t believe it was Smokie. There was no connection to Smokie, except some of our Losties saying it was the monster, but they were wrong (it was the spiders). Smokie doesn’t seem to interfere when it comes to conflict between people on the Island.

I was also wondering what Paolo was starring at right after the crash. It seems to have been more then just shock. He was looking out over the ocean, in the direction the plane would have traveled. I think there is something to that, but we don’t know yet what it is.

“Even more promising is that the producers have promised to use the episode to deliver some big twists and important revelations. As executive producer Damon Lindelof told EW in January: ”We had a plan when we introduced them… when the plan is executed, Nikki and Paulo will be iconic characters on the show.””
Iconic in what way? I liked the episode, but don’t see how they delivered big twists or changed how N&P are going to be remembered.

I wonder if things will happen later and we might look back and change our perspective about this episode – any thoughts?

180. mschuh says:

I have to admit that I was a fan of the first six episodes of the season, and I was hoping that the second part of the season would live up to the start. My main problem with the show is consistency. I am sorry, but last nights show was filler. Nikki and Paulo were added for their looks, and not to add a new dimensions to the show. The actors were wooden, and the dialoug was horrendous. If these characters are brought back then the show has truly “Jumped the Shark”. Finally, I thought there would be a stronger tie for Nikki and Paulo and the others. I think it would have made more sense to have them either affiliated with the others maybe it would’ve provided more mystery to the show.

I am hoping for the show to develop Jack more this season. His motivations and actions are starting to contradict his character from the first two seasons. Love Locke and his story; Locke is one of the best written and performed characters in television. I say kill Charlie and give Desmond more air time.

181. Will says:

When Paolo goes down into the Pearl station to hide the diamonds he is chewing his nicotine gum. The cigarette left on the table does not belong to him.

When Juliet and Ben turn up they see that the hatch has been left open. Juliet suggests that Mikhail must have left it open:

Ben: Who left this open?

Juliet: Mikhail went down here a couple of days ago.

Ben: Have him cover it up with a plank.

Perhaps the cigarette belonged to Mikhail.

Also, the walkie-talkie is Juliet’s. She puts it on the table and then forgets it. But does she do this on purpose because she knows one of the Losties is down there and she wants them to have a walkie-talkie?

She might have suggested to Ben that Mikhail left the hatch open so as not to make Ben suspicious.

182. JoshSpazJosh says:

Spiders bite Paulo, we hear the monster, Nikki gets bitten.

If the monster hadn’t been involved, Nikki might have had more time to run away or less spiders would have come giving her a greater chance of getting to camp and telling them about Paulo’s paralysis. They drag him back to camp, wait till he regains mobility, everything’s fine. Instead, they both get paralyzed, no one knows what happened, they get buried alive because no one knows about the paralysis.

183. XR15 says:

It should be pointed out that Nikki hears the Monster too (it’s not just the audience). She is looking around for the sound/monster when the spider crawls up her leg.

Seems likely. They showed that cig. butt again for reason and they did the cig. sequence at the safe so we would know who the smoker is. (Yet another answer we got from a JTS episode!)
As Will said a few comments ago, the cigarette in the Pearl Station was not Paolo’s. The purpose of the scene at the safe, with Paolo almost smoking in the house, was simply to show that Paolo’s a smoker. That led to the scenes with him and his nicotene gum, which eventually leads to Nikki discovering his deception (the gum packet falling out of his pocket), which sets in place the events that lead to them being buried alive.

for a real revelation – look at the preview/trailer for Expose where they are tossing dirt in the face of Nikki. In slow/stop motion, you can see the dirt changing into ‘smokie’ as it approaches her face.

re: Zombie Season. Theortically, a zombie is someone who has died, but has been returned to life and exists in a trance like state (checking my Haitian voodoo dictionary here). As far as the creators go, I think that the ‘zombie season’ reference only means that plot lines and backstories will delve into some of those that have passed – well before our Losties arrived – guys like Roger Work Man, and company. This will allow them to reveal many of the islands facts to us, without having to reveal them to our primary characters.

The airplane body is largely aluminum, yes. But, the miles of wiring in the modern airplane is typically copper, the engines are loaded with many alloys, titanium too. Another point – aluminum is generally not magnetic at low levels – but ANYTHING can be magnetized at high/severe magnetic levels (plastics, cloth, vegetation, people, for example).

Oh, wow, I had completely forgoten all about Ethan hanging Charlie. No, I doubt the spiders had anything to do with that. Again, Jack with the CPR. He was, well, not fine, but moving around after that.

208. Lost Survivor says:

Ok, now I’m one that really never picks up on things in the show, but my best friend does. Well, I think I finally got one with this week’s episode.

I’m going off on this, since many parts of the show can be related to a book. In this week’s episode, Zuckerman, the spider, and pigs are all mentioned. Everyone remember a book called Charlotte’s Web, in which all three of these ideas were in the book.

In CW, Zuckerman was the farmer, Wilbur was the pig, and Charlotte was the spider. I am linking these together, because I feel that either Nikki or Paulo will die, not both of them.

In Lost, there are boars on the island(wilbur) there are spiders now(charlotte) and zuckerman also. This is just a stretch, but only one animal died in the CW book, so I’m thinking either Nikki or Paulo will die, not both.

I hope I make sense in this blog, it sounded more clear last night when I thought about it. Anyone possibly agree, or I am totally off?

209. Hurley's Dad says:

The Charlotte’s Web idea is interesting. I thought the pigs comment from Arzt was a little out of place, but it is an idea.

Also, starting to get my kids involved with Lost, we are on Season 1 together. Watched an episode last night (I think it was ‘Whatever the Case may be’). Anyway, Boone is at the newly found hatch a lot and Shannon asks Boone “Is Locke your new boyfriend?”

Expose isn’t the first time she’s teased him about that, but considering Boone is seen with a blonde on his arm at the tennis club in “Hearts and Minds” as well as his little fling with Shannon, methinks this is a little bro/sis teasing.

Although, he did run a wedding company…….. :)

210. Tasha says:

Okay. This may be a spoiler so I am not going into it much… Did anyone watch Jimmy Kimbell last night? Is that his name? Anyway, Nikki was on it. I think maybe it gave away some hints. It seemed that way to me anyway. If anyone has a chance to watch a film clip…check it out!

211. Becky says:

Wow, the Charlotte’s Web thing is so cool! What a great connection. It would have been amazing if Sawyer were reading the book.

As far as Sun’s hair, she’s Korean and if hair grows about an inch a month and you have that amazing strong Asian hair like Sun does, odds are your hair will be that long. As far as Claire, I’m sure she just cut it. There have to be scissors somewhere on the island…not that questionable.

If either Nikki or Paolo come back, I hope it’s Paolo. Yes, he’s cute, but I just found his character to be more in depth. Nikki was very shallow: gold digger, flirt. But Paolo…something was up with him. He saw something out in the ocean and there is more to him than meets the eye.

212. Jay says:

Personally, I thought this episode was a waste of an hour. When I turned on the TV, I thought that it was an episode of SVU or CSI…ridiculous. As for Nikki and Paulo, I hope they are dead, but i think that Hurley will realize she said ‘paralyzed’ since he was a bit fixated on what she said and try to dig them up…but hopefully it would be too late. Also, I am not sure whether to think that the spiders were the monster, but I do believe that Nikki said something about the ‘noise’ in the jungle earlier in the episode. As for the directors ‘wife’ could it have been the woman Locke’s dad was engaged to when he pushed Locke out of the window? Is that timing off? Anyway, at the end of the episode, I wanted that hour of my life back…

213. Jay says:

oh ya…about the hair thing, I think I remember someone getting a trim on the island early on…unless i am just making that up. but there are definitly scissors hanging around

214. Liz says:

re: ZOMBIES
———-
When you WISH there were zombies on the show, then you’ll know they’ve told all there is to tell on LOST island.

I dunno, that body count is getting awfully high–time to break out the chicken feathers and do the Zombie dance?

Arise Nikki and Paolo! Wreak havoc upon the living! Ekko, get your undead butt up here and retrieve your stick from Locke so you can use it to force the others (the living others in general, not just The Others) to join you in the after-death-life. Use that Eko mojo to become king of the zombies. Revenge yourself upon the smoke monster! Who is mysterious but not a zombie, I’m pretty sure, but hey, he can’t kill you again if you’re already dead, and maybe your zombie-hood will give you special powers over him/it in the Lost-hood. I can hope. Ana Lucia and Libby can be your co-queens for some freakish mad fun, or will Libby be too busy chasing Hurley and trying to convert him to the Zombie Way?

Or maybe Ben should be king of the zombies, and Juliette his undead squeeze-the-life-out-of-everyone queen. Either way is good. Maybe there can be a War of the Zombies, with Locke, Ekko & Ben duking it out for supremecy. Whoever has the most limbs left wins.

And I think Jack should be the last alive-man standing, raising his fist to the heavens on the highest point of Lost island, abject terror and resignation to the inevitable on his face, surrounded by former friends-now-zombies, shuffling towards him, ugh-uh-shuffle-shuffle, blue-grey undead flesh decaying in the sun (Boone’ll be the most decayed, of course, unless we count Jack’s zombie dad.), as Jack cries, “Why?!?” as he is overwhelmed by the futility of it all and all those squooshy undead folks drag him under.

FADE TO BLACK

Now that’s drama!
~or some B- version of it.

Just a quick comment on the hair growth of the Losties… Claire trimmed Charlie’s hair in a previous season and new bangs appearing on the girls would be practical actually for all the work they do gardening, caring for baby, etc. Sun’s hair I have not noticed growing longer than normal but she is pregnant which can cause change in hair texture-density due to hormones. but the BIGGEST thing, I thought, to come out of this episode…and why it was so important…is that it exposed what the island is, the whole premise of the show. the island is the BOX (TV).

FANTASTIC SUMMATION! I’ve been a die-hardererer since s1e1, 922044:16, that is! :) However, let’s not forget the biggest threory continuum:

Nikki, upon taking the key from ol’ man hackey’s (name?) neck (identical to failsafe key), puts it into the safe. This futhers the link-up theory. Notice the microwave (Desmond) is identical in sound to the beep @ the countdown.

2.) The monster, this is perhaps just ANOTHER one… not a clue to the monster’s origin… is Rose’s NY Taxi receipt printer.

3.) The numbers are Hurley’s lottery.

4.) The album in the hatch is actually Sawyer’s band, Jeronimo Jackson.

5.) I forget the rest.

The continuum / continuation of the theory is the flashbacks we’ve seen are actually the reality & what happens on the island (the countdown, the monster = ? = partially rose? nahhh), etc. is actually the manifestation, per Ben, of these survivors.

224. I suppose the Others, who know this island, harvest these Medusa spiders. That explains the darts that knocked Jack (nice try!) & Kate, etc. flat on their artzes in S2. I wonder… though… if there was some sort of inherent Tarantino reverence by the Nikki “Hey you’re poisoned & now I’m gonna give you some sadistic speech!” followed-up by the buried alive sequence(s)… very, very, very Kill Bill V.2. But, nonetheless, very revealing. Quite the expose, to quote another fan on here… too many revelations at once to process. I must remind all, though, that per the makers of the show, there is more than JUST THE SMOKE to the monster, we’ve been looking at it all along & not known it (Christian images? More? Perhaps other manifestations??? Manifestations like bears per Walt, not some Dharma experiement?) all along… so, as for these 2 parts/components to the monster, my guess is mind + smoke, or smoke + something conduit-related (explaining the mechanical sounds, ref: S1.

225. Mr Ecko says:

the episode really wasn’t all that bad. we needed to know what the deal with these characters was, and we got a good glimpse of their perspectives so far. the show isn’t perfect, and neither are the writers…but, it’s by far the best thing on television and deals with fascinating, timeless issues such as faith, redemption, dualism, the hereafter, etc. LOST has rarely let us down with characters and places and storylines that do not go anywhere, so why don’t we hold off on the nikki and paulo bashing until (at least) the end of the season.

i think paulo, we will later learn, was definently in cohoots with ethan and the others. he mentioned to nikki (after she asked Arzt for help) that ethan was the only one they should and could trust. i think he was lying to nikki all along about being recruited right away by ethan and was told that ben and juliet would leave him a walkie-talkie in the hatch. the others wouldnt care about the diamonds, and would be more interested in whatever paulo could do to help them (specifically with getting jack, kate, and sawyer). think about it? why would paulo not tell anyone that the others were on to them, and more importantly, that three of the main people are going to be manipulated and kidnapped? why would he not mention the other hatch, the plane, etc.? why would he keep the walkie-talkie if he never planned on using it?

enjoy and hopefully this week’s will be a bit better than last’s.

Dear baby Jesus, PLEASE let there be a grand plan surrounding this episode because I am in agony! How are the writers going to dangle a a big juicy carrot infront of me (ie. revealing Locke’s dad on the island) and then not even address it in the following episode?!?! There were times while watching when I wondered if maybe Lost was on AFTER this irrelevant episode of Tales from the Crypt! I sympathize with the writers in that not all characters are compelling and well-recieved but I really think it would’ve been best to just gently push Nikki and Paulo back into the backround with the rest of the extras. I felt like their story was forced and that they were sloppily thrown into key parts of the past two seasons. Putting them into the scene of Jack’s infamous “die alone” speech was like placing Colonel Sanders at the first reading of the ten commandments. Blasphemy! 
I suppose what I’m trying to say is that I simply wasn’t invested enough in these two characters to enjoy an episode entirely about them. I feel like I did last season when I waited all week to find out it was just a repeat episode…I’ve learned nothing of value. The only hope I hold out for this episode is that Paulo was, in fact, collaborating with the others. I am, however, indifferent on the subject of his survival. He IS gorgeous but I’d watch shirtless Saywer over him any day! Please Lost writers!!! Cut your loses with this tragic couple and give me more of what I saw in “The Man from Tallahasse”!! Those scenes between Locke and Ben were the most thrilling Ive seen in a long time!!!!

I really dont think this will the ending (i.e. the “box” being the TV and the viewers influencing the course of events). The producers themselves have repeatedly said that the ending will NOT be a cheat. That what is happening to the characters are REALLY happening them to them. Also, the writers and producers are sci-fi geeks, and I highly doubt that kind of ending would be satisfying to them.

You might be onto something, but I think the connection would be that Charlotte died after having babies since children are a fixation for the others, maybe islanders die after giving birth…

well if this charlottes web thing is true, sun is pregnant, so could she be in danger, and also claire gave birth on the island, and so did danielle(right) and they are fine, so i dont think that this could be an accurate theory. however very clever, and i guess stranger things have happened.

On the sun issue though, they havent even brought up her pregancy since god knows when. why hasnt she been taken by the others like claire was? or will she ….dun dun dunnnn!!

230. Hammer says:

Liz – I should have specified, by Islanders I meant original inhabitants (like Ben). They are working with fertility doctors and Juliette was shown the uterous of a young woman that looked very old. If this theory is a one…it would be for the others and not for intuders. It could mean that it is more complex than just infertile women and stealing children.

231. liz says:

Hammer- gotcha, ok that makes sense. i definatly thought you were talking about losties. None of the others have kids exceot ben. Danielle is not an other so i guess its a likely theory. but with danielle, it still doesnt make sense to me me that she has been able to avoid the others for this long? i mean 16 yrs. thats crazy! if the others are so great and powerful, how have they just left her alone, i think there is more to danielle then we think. how did she and ben have a daughter when ben has been on the island his whole life. or is alex not his biological daughter? that is the only thing that would make sense.. any insight anyone?

232. Hammer says:

Liz- go to the Who is Danielle Rousseau? thread. Lots of discussion there about this.

another theory:
- locke’s dad is a con man
- sawyer’s mom was conned (& his father ended up killing her & himself)
- locke’s dad shows up on the island
i’ve had this theory for a while that locke’s dad is the one who conned sawyer’s mom. i really think this episode confirmed it. but hell, who knows maybe I’m just insane. but then again, this is lost. Right?

i think there is a very good possibilty that johns father is the one who conned sawyers mom and dad. i cant wait to find out. and if it is, its just another crazy coincidence.

but also, i was thinking about how ben and the others didnt even know anything about losties until the plane crash. the others obviously didnt “bring them to the island” so if thats the truth, why all the strange coincidences between the losties?? i guess it stems to the main question why are they all on the island?
Lostpedia has a shot of the newspaper that Paulo was reading in the airport and it is dated 2 days after the crash!
From Lostpedia’s entry on this week’s podcast:

“What’s up with the erroneous date on the newspaper in the Sydney airport in Exposé?

They don’t know and blame it on a prop error. Ultimately Gregg Nations is responsible for the timeline. The flight did take off on 9/22.”
