After whispers over the weekend, ABC has just announced that we’ll have 3 more seasons of Lost. Each season will be shortened to 16 episodes but will air uninterrupted.
CNN reports:
Lindelof said having the end point in sight was “incredibly liberating. Like we’ve been running a marathon and we actually know where the finish line is for the first time.”
“What we didn’t know was how long we had to play the story out,” Cuse said. “By defining the endpoint we can now really map out the rest of the series in confidence.”
“We sort of view ‘Lost’ as a mosaic,” Cuse said. “Now there are only 48 more tiles that go into that mosaic, and we’re figuring out, along with all the other writers, exactly where they all go.”
We were expecting an announcement of 2 more season, so even at 16 episodes, we think this is great news.

I think this is a great move. A lot of people are upset about having 3 more seasons as opposed to 2, 24 ep seasons, but I’m not one of them. This means one more season premier ep and one more season finale ep, and those are always the most exciting ones. Plus, having another year to speculate about the show is just fine with me. I’m in no rush to see it end.
it also means they can take more time and care crafting each episode. it’s practically the HBO model. bravo!
I like it, but that leaves us with 36 weeks per year without Lost, that’s pretty harsh. :-/
It’s terrific news and I am all for it. The only downside as far as I can see is that three years is a lot of real-world time. Some of the actors may want out, some may grow up (Walt!), etc. Also, I was secretly hoping there would be 108 episodes total. Now it looks like something closer to 120.
This is quite exciting, as now it seems as if The Powers That Be can really formulate the exact storyline at an episode level going forward. Here’s my prediction of how the seasons will go:
Season 4 – The secrets of the island are revealed to the Losties, including who or what Smokie the Monster is, with the various intricacies and deceptions of The Others brought to light. No deaths in this season.
Season 5 – Charts the Losties’ fight to get off the island and the resistance of The Others’ attempts to prevent that. Lots of ‘dirty tricks’ campaigns going on. Season ends with the Losties finally getting back to civilization.
Season 6 – The Losties attempt to get back to a normal life, but we see how their experience on the island has truly affected them, and how they will never really escape from The Others. The true extent of control and influence that The Others and/or their controlling organization have in the world is revealed.
To XR15 – 120 episodes also fits well with the storyline:
Flight 815…8 x 15 = 120.
english guy:
hmm.. an off-island season would be interesting, but i don’t think it really fits. it would feel like the extra season of x-files after duchovny left. it just wouldn’t be satisfying to see all these characters in different parts of the world, separate from each other.
i can see the finale being a very emotional rescue and goodbye between all of the surviving characters, and probably coinciding with the death of a major character: jack, kate, or sawyer.
I see it ending with the Losties realizing that they can’t/won’t go home. They will see that Ben’s work was evil, but the island’s purpose is good and their lives (who ever is left) would be better served staying. Too much has happened already that wouldn’t allow for a normal life back home and they still have 3 more seasons of events to happen.
boo hoo…..I am missing Lost already…and I still have 48 episodes left.
But I have to agree, good move, the show will go out on top for sure.
It sucks to have only 48 new episodes after this season, but this needed to happen last year. a race like this needs a finish line and we finally have one. i will be sad to see lost go, but i really want to put all these late night lost theories and thoughts to rest. now the producers, writers, and ourselves can really get our hands dirty and start burying these dead bodies
i have enjoyed this show like no other, but like everything else it must come to an end. Much better to end on your own terms and go out your own way.

Agreed KillerR, the creators came up with an awesome story and now they can tell the rest the way they imagined it.
I think it will end with a rescue, but Locke stays.
Uh oh! Here comes the zombie season!
Uh oh! Here comes the zombie season!
Well, haven’t D&C always said the 7th season will be the zombie season? Thing are falling into place perfectly……with the end date announced, interest will be heightened, Lost will be a top 10 show for the next 3 seasons, and ABC will renege on the deal and force a 7th season!
At first it seems sad to loose like eight episodes every season. But after a closer thought it just makes the best even better. We hopefully get rid of filler episodes and go straight onto mythology og drama every episode.
If they keep going like they’ve done for the last half of season three, they’ve made a show so remarkable it cannot be copied.
In a way it could be awesome that some of the last episodes or the entire last season was off-island. But on the other hand – this is the island we have come to love, and let’s not forget that the island is a main character too.
My best guess is that we have some major issues revealed through season 3, 4 and 5 – and then the biggest in season 6 (Like Adam & Eve – we were once told that the revelation of those would be the proof that the writes knew what was going on in the show all the way along. So my guess is that their role is revealed in some of the last episodes – and thus, is on-island).
I’m sorry for gramma and spelling errors. My English is getting a little rusty. Hope it makes sense though..
I agree Hammer, the Losties will be the Others once it all ends. It will be interesting to see who stays, who dies, who joins them and who moves on to the world outside. I am glad we get three more seasons even though they will be shorter. The question is what will we all do with our time three years from now. I shudder to think! Actually doing the research and discussing the theories is really part of what makes it all so special. Maybe by then we will luck into another such show.
Like Lesley says, a big part of Lost for many of us, is discussing theories and trying to figure out what the heck is going on.
I watched the first two seasons non-stop on DVD, and then I’ve watched season three episode by episode with a week inbetween. And doing it this way really gives so much more insigt into Lost.
For example, I doubt I would have figured out (SPOILER NEXT!!!!) that Anthony Cooper was the real Sawyer (SPOILER END HERE), had I not had the time to go through the events of the respective episodes with so much detail.
How about this for an ending?
The end of the 6th season launches the Losties into a multi-million dollar movie as the complete series finale?
12 million viewers per week * $8 = $96 million
And if you’re like me, you’ve seen every episode AT LEAST twice. JJ Abrams did fairly well with Mission Impossible 3.
Has a series ever ended with a movie finale?
I always thought a movie ending would be great way to cap off the show. But I recently was listening to an interview that D&C gave to National Public Radio. In that interview, Carlton said he believes the show should continue and finish on TV, and that there are no plans for a movie. If you want to hear his exact quote, it’s on an NPR show called “On Point with Tom Ashbrook” dated 3/28/2007.
I actually wished it would be 2 more seasons… I think the writers need to come up with episodes like the last ones of this season to keep their viewers…
as FMGreen Steve said.. 36 weeks per year there won’t be lost. They should provide us with awesome season finales, otherwise they will probably loose many more watchers over the 3 years.

Serenity sort of ended with a movie.
Well i think that’s perfect. Lost really needed at definate end date or else they could never map out when to reveal these mysteries. And also i think the last season will basically be like a movie
4 will reveil big secrets & some of the secrets will create a few new ones.
5 will reveil the huge secrets & a few of them will create more mysteries.
6 no more questions, everything will be reveiled in a 3 hour finale.
3 more seasons with 16 eps each really sucks. I’d rather 2 seasons with more eps. People will find a new show to watch every Wednesday by January & then lost will loose more viewers. But heck, if Idol can do from Jan – May, Lost can to.
It will end, and we will mourn it, like we mourned Six Feet Under which paved the way for LOST, and we will move on to some other TV show which will be very different but also super wonderfully great in its own way…and never forget our LOST experiences. *sigh*
more lost. fantastic! but can they keep up the suspense/intrigue for another 3 years?
i watched every episode of twin peaks and x-files (in my yoof) and my feeling is that the team behind it will struggle for decent storylines. what happens when the big movie players come calling? we will lose characters big time. and does any actor want to become type-cast?
lastly the acting is top notch. the casting fantastic. there is no weak actor among them… apart from that ms dorrit character. really poor actress, i’m sorry.. and i nearly cringed when she said “mate” in that posh accent. and that’s coming from a pom!
taking entire years off between seasons hasn’t hurt ‘the sopranos.’ it won’t hurt ‘lost’ either. in fact, it will give everyone time to catch up before the new episodes air, and it’ll allow ABC to market each mini-season as a full on EVENT. great decisions all around.
I don’t think there will be any problem with 3 seasons. Like stated earlier, now they can finish on their terms. I have not been disappointed by these guys yet (remove the fact that they over killed Mikhail, haha) so I think that now there will be no filler episodes and they can work on exposing the mysteries in a more consistent manner.
Let the beginning of the end….begin?
Hey, hows about a prequel?
Sumpthin like “Lost-the high school years”?
U could have sawyer, jack and frecekls adnd all the rest going to the same high school, amybe in hawaii. this is befoer they all turned bad.
ben could be the evil princapal. Tom coudl be the bus driver.
sawyer’s a drop out, remember. but he can still smoke his cigarettes while charlie does cocaine outside the school right?
and i hope the writers introduce characters better then they did at the begiinning of this year. just sayin “here’s the new characters. u r going to hear about nothin but them for 8 episodes straight. and the losties, forget about em. the others r your friends now.” does not make anybody to happy. i wish they would’ve done that better. i wish they would’ve flip floped the eps more or at least given us a ridculous backstory for the losties to have.
Plus, Lost will NEVER be forgotten, its like ‘Friends’, everyone who ever watched it will just be watching the repeats over and over until you can recite the Script backwards in pig latin.

i already can.
3 seasons with 16 eps is rubbish! i like all the eps put into 24 its wat makes lost… lost!
they also didnt think about the fact if its gone for longer through the summer peeps will forget about it!!!
no jack 16 EPISODES IS LIKE A FILTER TAKING OUT 8 RUBBISH EPISODES AND LEAVING US WITH AMAZING EPISODES THAT CAN ONLY ANSWER OUR QUESTIONS…THINK ABOUT IT THERES ONLY 48 EPSIDOES LEFT AND SO MANY QUESTIONS THE NEXT 50 EPISDOES WILL BE PACKED FULL OF NESSASSERY CLUES HINTS AND ANSWERS TO THE ULTIMATE LOST QUESTIONS! 48 EPISODES EQUALS 48 HOURS I COULD WATCH LOST 2 DAYS STRAIGHT IF I HAD TO.
ye i guess but u think bout itever way ur getting the same amount of episodes their just further out meaning 36 weeks a year of no lost, wat other supreme shows r on at 10 like lost?????????????????????????????? i rest my case.

People didn’t forget about the Sopranos, did they?

But you get another few YEAR of lost. Yeah, it’s a little annoying that we’re going to have to wait so long, but the intrigue will continue for longer. I mean, what the hell are we going to do when Lost is over? Get a life? I doubt it.
no offence but the supranos isnt amazing. lost is.also i heard rumours of lost ending in a film is this true????
No, I don’t think so. I heard that a while back too, but I think they changed their minds about it.
NAH A FILM WOULD BE TOO OH LOOK AT ME! THAT WOULD MAKE LOST SEEM BIG HEADED. STICK TO THE CLASSIC.
HOW DO U GUYS THINK LOST WILL END?
CAN ANYONE THINK OF A SHOW WITH AS MUCH TENSION AND DRAMA AS LOST? NOTHNIG COMPARES TO IT. I JUST WISH EVERYONE WOULD AGREE.
HOW DO U GUYS THINK LOST WILL END?
I don’t really like to think about it. I know it will be great, what ever happens, but I don’t want to get ideas stuck in my head and get disappointed if it’s something completely different or ridiculous.
NO MATTER WHAT THE END TO LOST WILL LEAVE ME GOBSMACKED FOR WEEKS!
if american idol can get 20+ million viewers to quit whatever it is that they’ve been watching the rest of the year to watch a gian kareoke contest with a new cast of people every year, lost can. Lost is a hell of a lot better than a giant kareoke contest & i’m very interested in my favorite characters. like meg said, what do u think we’re all gonna do over the extremely long hiatus, get a life? no, we’re gonna watch another show to be our filler & in december we’ll all be gettin a lost buzz.
OH MY GOD!!!! WHAT AN AMAZINGGGGGGGGGGG EPISODE!!! I AM SPEECHLESS……MASTERCLASSS!!!! ABSOLUTELY SUPERB…I JUST WANT TO REMAIN LOST
I am 30 and this was the best one hour of my tv in my life! I don’t know how to put it in other words!!
I HAVENT SEEN THE EPISODE SO DO U ACTUALLY SEE JACOB?
ye i guess but u think bout itever way ur getting the same amount of episodes their just further out meaning 36 weeks a year of no lost, wat other supreme shows r on at 10 like lost?????????????????????????????? i rest my case.
YH BUT HAVE U EVR SEEN A FILM WHERE U THINK THEY SHOULD HAVE STOPPED SOMEWHERE BEFORE THE ENDING, IF LOST KEEPS GOING THE WRITERS ARE JUST DIGGING THEMSLEVES A BIGGER WHOLE FILLED WITH TOO MANY QUESTIONS THAT NEED ANSWERS, ITS LIKE THE FILM THE GODFATHER, IT WENT ON AND ON AND DIDNT REALLY NEED TO THEY COULD HAVE CUT OUT SOOOO MANY BITS AND NOW THE WRITERS HAVE A GOAL TO REACH AND WE WILL SEE MORE LOST BEING REVEALED OVER THE NEXT COUPLE OF WEEKS.
